Strang call: caller ID showed 555-5555

just got a strange call on my cellphone. The caller number was 555-5555. That guy spoke some gibbish words very fast I couldn't understand. Then he dropped the line and I found my internet connection on the cable was down also. WTF, I reset the cable modem and restarted the computer and back again.

I got a call from a 999-999-9999 once. I just ignored it.

some people block caller ID and it appears as 555-5555. i'm not sure if that's related to your internet downtime but maybe it's a new exploit if you're using VoIP.

I hope it's not hacked. My cellphone has nothing to do with the internet, right? I don't use VOIP. Maybe it's just coincidence.

If you have the right equipment, you can send anything across the line for your caller-id. Popular thing is to send the number for the whitehouse. There's also a few sites online that do it too. Nothing special.

Any place with a half-descent ACD (telephony switch) or some basic services / software can spoof the caller ID. You can't easily spoof an ANI though...
