Anyone here doing it?

Get a smartphone using straight talk $45 /monthly. Get iPhone 4, cut sim. Change some apns and iPhone working on art network for $45.

Thinking of going back to the iPhone, now I will have 3g speeds and no need to unlock.

I've done it to 2 iPhones, works well, only problem is no MSM's, but everything else works fine, only difficulty I had was Straight Talk seems incapable of porting numbers, they sent a total of 6 sim cards and 2 phone replacements claiming it was necessary to port the numbers, finally gave up and just ported the original numbers to Google Voice and took the assigned Straight Talk numbers.

After reading about various user's experiences, be careful to not stream music, movies, or tether extensively over GSM, they seem to tag people who use a lot of data and shut off their service. Most have gotten reinstated with a call to customer service.

You need a SIM card trimmer (you can find them all over the net, even from Amazon) to make the card small enough to fit in an iPhone 4 or 4S.

Porting was a pain but after it was done everything is ok. Using it now with iPhone, jail broke to get mms. The e71 is gone from their website probably for good. The 6790 is still there but it's a worse phone if you Plan on using it. The e5 replaces the e71 and also has an unlocked sim bit since its new it's expensive.

The e71, 6790, and e5 all have unlUcked sims. St is also getting the Optimus 2x for tmobile soon.

straight talk is a daughter company for AT&T. So it uses the exact same network and towers. This is what I'm doing for my GF. Got her an Nokia e71 refurbed from the website for $50. Bought a 30 day unlimited card for $45. Activated nokia after transferring her number and switched the sim to the iPhone 3GS she has. No problem. Her phone was already jail broken so I just had to fiddle with it to get MMS working. Everything else works just fine.

I will state this. We had some initial problems. If you buy a refurb phone, the SIM card in it will be an older and already activated card. Which means you can't do a number transfer to it. It can only be activated with the number stored in the SIM card already. You will need a new sim card sent to you to do a number transfer on a refurb phone. So you have to call customer service. I HIGHLY recommend calling the miami call center number. Otherwise you will get the India one and they are completely retarded. You'll go through about 5 or 6 reps all having to go through their "script" exactly before figuring out they can't help you and push you "up the line" to the next higher rep that may have more power than they did. We made that mistake once and you sit on the phone for a good 2 hours until you speak with a "manager" who still will screw shit up. Which is what happened to us. We eventually called the Miami customer center and the first guy did it all for us correctly.

Fair warning that the india service SUCKS! The transfer also took awhile. Like 3 days. After that initial hiccup we haven't had a problem since.

There is no longer any need to buy a phone just to get the unlocked sim. They are going to start selling unlocked sims that will work in any GSM phone.

So a straight talk iPhone 4 and a att iPhone 4 will have same reception and everything aside from issues with mms and possible 2gb limit.

No one should be able to tell correct? Its not like a limited cell coverage map or anything?

I have a GSM question, I'm considering ST, but what's a good flip phone? I know Flip phones aren't popular any more so I'm not expecting a uber new model or anything. But I'd still like to find the nicest one I can. Also for GSM did HTC release a EVO 4G equivalent?

There will be no roaming, only native AT&T towers

Don't know about a flip phone. They did release a GSM Evo 3D in canada. Not sure about the regular evo 4g.

No, it is a subsidiary of América Móvil. Thus it's a sister company of Tracfone and Net10. It is an MVNO , so it is a separate company that leases access from real carriers like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile.

Straight Talk is América Móvil's top tier, with Net10 being the middle and Tracfone being the bottom.

Wow, bought the Nokia refurb Straight Talk for $99 to get the SIM in December, then it was $49 two days later, now it'll be $15 for just the SIM. Oh well.

I wonder if now that they're doing this officially, they'll articulate their "unlimited data" policy better.

I'm thinking about doing the BYO SIM and paying the ETFs on my SGS2 and my wife's iPhone 4. I'd have almost the full term on mine, while hers would be reduced about 75%. 90/mo for both of our phones? That's unbeatable, even against family plans.

We're not heavy data users - we each use about 500MB, maybe 1GB for me, tops. Yet I have to pay for 2 gigs on each phone ($25 each). Unlimited texting and mobile to mobile is $30 (family). That's $80 right there and I don't even have any talk time.

In reality, we pay about $140 together with voice and taxes. I'd make that back fast.

I have to wait 4 months to do it so I don't have to pay the Amazon ETF too. So 265 (my ETF) + 145 (wife's). $410 in ETF, $50/mo in savings. I make my money back in under 9 months.

What's the catch?

Customer Service is pretty bad, if you're going to port your number, just prot it to Google Voice and take the Straight Talk number, unless you're into pain.

They needed to start doing this. 12-16 months ago people were doing it anyway when ST starting selling their one GSM phone.

This is really a shocking development... I think its great but I'm sure it will have some interesting consequences... and I don't know what they will be. I don't see how AT&T will allow that to happen. If they do start to allow more liberal use of data it will keep me from moving to something like Red Pocket, who makes ST's customer service look comparatively decent .

AT&T is equally awful. They can't merge our two accounts into a family plan because my wife and I have phone numbers in different time zones. We've had our numbers for 10+ years, and they cannot put them on the same account.

Even Sprint had no trouble with that.

Well, the ST micro sim arrived today. It looks like my wife's iPhone will be the first. I need to figure out if I have to jailbreak for MMS or not, though.

I think you do need to jailbreak.

On another note, my data speeds have been unreliable on ST lately. Anyone else?
