(NEW YORK) - Police say it was the leg of a stowaway that fell from the wheel well of a plane approaching New York's JFK Airport Tuesday morning.

The leg landed on the roof of a detached garage in Long Island and bounced into the backyard. A resident says she got home from work and saw the leg with a sneaker on the foot lying in the grass.

Officials say more remains were found after the plane landed at Kennedy.

The South African Airways jet was lowering its landing gear when the body part fell out. The plane left Johannesburg and stopped in Senegal on its way to New York.

Wow....that's got to be a really bad way to go.

I'm thinking he died and his leg was severed when the landing gear was raised on take-off.

That could be too. I was thinking he died from hypoxia after the plane took off.

Don't transantlantic flights fly a lot higher than regular ones? If I remember the announcement last time I flew the temparature outside is something like -72 celcius. That's instant death.

You gotta hope for that guy's sake that the amputation came post-mortem...

Yep. Here is a story of a 10-year old Chinese boy who fell to his death after attempting to stowaway in a plane's landing gear.

The other point is, gee they must have some real great security there at that airport in Jo'burg or Senegal...

I found it somewhat funny that the detached leg fell on a detached garage...

I read something about some dude who stowed away in the landing gear on the plane from Cuba or something (don't remember exactly where) but he survived the freezing cold of high altitudes by clinging to a hot pipe that he was lucky to be next to. He supposedly survived the trip I think.
