Okay, I need help choosing a Short Story for a research paper. We have to determine the main theme of an American literature short story and prove it through research. We have to research the whole basis of the short story. What are some great American short stories with a obvious theme. I have some in mind...tell me what you guys think.

"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe would be a good choice.

It's an excellent short story, with a pretty obvious theme of the ultimate revenge.

Crazy Sunday- F Scottz Fitzgerald
The Killers- Ernest Hemingway
My Dead Brother Comes to America- Alexander Godin
Double Birthday- Willa Cather

and Ill look into the Poe short story

There's another Poe short story about a heart. I can't remember what it's called, but IIRC, a servant kills his master, and thinks he can still hear the heart beating from under the floorboards (where he buried the body) and confesses to a policeman who's come round.

Hemingway's always classic.

I love hills like white elephants. I even wrote an essay called "elephants and ambiguity" about hemingway's slightly macho american brand existentialism.
