In about 1999 or so a regular joe cashed one of those fake "This may be yours!" checks at an ATM. What ensued was months of news interviews, articles, and alot of hassle with the bank. He ultimately returned the check.

Does anyone have a link to the article?

Don't have the link, but I remember reading that story some time back. Try Google, maybe?

anybody got cliff notes for the lazy? :)

Cliff Notes: Suck it up and read the damn page, foo! :p ;)

okay how about just the ending? :gift:

As I recall, he didn't get to keep the money. It was just an experiment to see what would happen since the wording on the check wasn't totally explicit about it being a fake check, as I recall.

Here's a better formatted version of it. Link

The story is really good and entertaining actually, though its like a good 20-30 minute read, if you read fast.

I have his book, I don't remember what it's called. Bought it after reading the story years ago.

I don't remember much about it, didn't leave a lasting impression apparently.

I remember reading that a while back, and I thought it read like fiction. I thought it was far too detailed, and far too well written to be one "regular Joe's" first person account of the story. I didn't check up on it though, so I don't know if it's fiction or not.

An enjoyable read, none the less.

The second link is the good one. I actually found it fairly quick but forgot to update it. Sorry guys. Looks like you found it anyway.

EDIT: From the last page of the story...

* Yearly ISP fee for Man1Bank0 site: $300
* Amount spent on professional editing of the story: $450 ... (which, by the way, left some mistakes still in the story as almost all editing does.It takes many rounds of editing to get a book perfect.)
* Cost of Dreamweaver software to create the pages: $300
* Hours invested in writing the story: 3000 (Yes, three thousand.)
* Fees for a year of writing classes applied directly to improving the story: $975
* Amount of readers (out of 20,000) who usually tip me, per week: 2 (two).
* The fact that you're not charged to read the last chapter: PRICELESS.

It's an amazing piece of writing and not just for the content. This guy started off as a grungy kind of character and by the time the story ended he became this sophisticated, well-articulated person. If it's not a real story, it is still an excellent piece of character development and if it is true (and I think it is), it is still a great story of the development of his character :)
