Storm of Zehir: NWN2

I am an Obsidian Entertainment fan (more like a Black Isle Studios fan), so I purchased an expansion pack to a game in a franchise I adore.

I enjoy the change of setting, I enjoy the overland map and the mercantile aspect are all refreshing changes. It also seems to have an old-school RPG feel to it.

However, the game does not seem to have any life to it. This is the same reason I could not get into Icewind Dale until the NPC Project. My party is a bunch of lifeless zombies, I cannot stand not having a party that has life to it. BG2 spoiled me on this and it seems crucial ever since.

I have played it for about three hours so far and I seem to be having difficulty getting into it. Does this game get better or have I wasted my money? I might be able to get some mods out of it, I suppose.

FWI, I loved NWN2 and NWN2's first expansion.

Wasn't my favorite but by the end I was at least ok. It is very slow and the random encounters are not well done.

Compared to BG2 I dont think ANY game has any life to it.
At least KOTOR was entertaining. NWN 1 and 2 feel like hack'n'slash under the 3rd Edition D&D system.

I knew I wasn't going to like SoZ (I never bought it, only have the other two games). As soon as I heard that the developers were going to let you create your own party members, I knew this game was not going to be good. Too much control absolutely ruins the game.

I enjoyed SoZ, unfortunately it was rather unmemorable as I can't recall what I enjoyed about it. All of the NWN2 games / mods have sorta molded into 1 memory in my mind so it's hard to pick 1 out of the bunch. I did like the overland map though and felt the classes were all a lot more useful in the game because of the way it was designed.

What is the trick to talking to party members in SoZ? I am using the NPCs that join my party (like the guy with the talking dinosaur). I suspect that there is a key combo that I am missing that is not listed in the key mappings (like the quick save).

Nevermind, figured it out... they do not have much to say.... ack...

I give up on this game, even rerolled to try new characters of different classes. I simply cannot get into it. While I love Obsidian Entertainment, I think they produced a game that I do not like here. I am not going to waste any more time with it. If you think this is going to be another NX1, think again.

I very much prefer the first 2 campaigns over Storm. Like one person said, too much control can ruin things. A lot of these long RPGs are great because of the story and companions. In the first 2 campaigns most of the companions were excellent, especially in MotB. The making your own party sounds cool, but it greatly limits story and character development, which IMO is what these games are about.

Hope for more NWN2 campaigns, but I honestly doubt it. NWN2, while a great game, had too many serious bugs and way too high system requirements for what it was, and those flaws really wrecked its enormous potential.

After its many years of patching and on modern hardware I still recommend the first 2 campaigns to anyone who enjoys linear RPGs.

The companions aren't the point of this campaign, it's the spirit of exploration. It's a very combat centric expansion. IIRC good gear was harder to come by in this expansion and the enemies could get pretty difficult, however having your own crafted team meant that if you knew what you were doing, you could always present a solid force.

You needed to go into this with the right frame of mind for it to be enjoyable.

I hope Obsidian gets to make something for the DAO engine.

My only problem with it was the lack of epic large dungeons which should be a staple of any AD&D game. If I recall the ones in SoZ were extremely short.

Similar situation here, while I enjoyed NWN1 and it's expansions & NWN2, I could not get into the expansions for NWN2. Something was missing. I started MotB twice and fizzled out around halfway both times.
