Storing an old processor - advice pls

I'm in two minds about keeping my old Athlon XP 2500+ - there are plenty on ebay and I'm unlikely to re-use it through my work, but hey ho.

My question is - I don't have a bit of sponge that a processor might typically ship with to sit on to protect the pins. Would any old bit of sponge do? I've read bits here and there that suggest yes or no, but I'd like to be sure before potentially static zapping it.

You're talking about ESD foam. Using a kitchen sponge makes about as much sense as using a piece of a foam plate. You can do it as long as there is no static charge on it and you place the cpu + plate/sponge into an ESD bag for storage.
