Blaming everyone except himself. Now he has a brand new Accord v6 coupe, pretty much fully loaded, and I see redirected mail from the financers all the time. They don't know his current address.
6 months after we moved to this apartment, he is finally noting that "I should change my address with my creditors." Duh.
His mom helps him pay for the car (halves?), his cell phone (whole), his computer(whole). He is in his mid thirties, and makes about 50k a year. Our rent is cheap, and we pay no utils. Right now, we have no cable, phone, isp's...because he had to think about the expense when we moved in. Despite the fact he had no problem going halves we decided to room.
Now he is asking about getting broadband, and I went off on him. We missed the deals where it needs a year contract.
He's pretty much a dead beat.
We went for months without a fridge...because I couldn't corner him to come up with his money. Another friend and I finally got one for 20 bucks (a salute to the old Admirals), and the roomate still hasn't paid his ten bucks.
-edit-btw-My friend helped me move the fridge upstairs, a 3 hour project involving removing doors everywhere. At one point, we lifted it above our heads. When I called him about the fridge help, he couldn't make it to help out.-end edit-
I bought a kick-a$$ GE microwave at a good price at 90 bucks. I phoned him before I got it to make sure the price was okay for him. Over two months later, I still don't have the money from him.
Each end of the month, "let's get rent in the mail" day is fun.
No cable, no internet, no fridge...WTF? Sounds like you're living in a third world country.f
No kidding! Where do you live, and how much does your rent eat, that living with another person, paying only VERY basic utils, and making 50K a year still leaves your roommate with nothing at the end of the month?

Fullerton, CA near Anaheim. A nice unit converted from a 191x era house. Place is big. No utils. The guy downstairs now shares his broadband with me, I offer to pay, but he will not accept because he knows the story.
I think he blows all his money on his girlfriend. That's not my issue with him...the benefit is I hardly see him. Things are better. The fridge is stocked with my food and beer. Got the microwave. And since I'm useless in the kitchen, my mom sent me some cookbooks for begginers. Things are looking up.
The bad part is, the living room and office is filled with his crap he hasn't unpacked yet (we moved in in april).
I believe he is a deadbeat, and swimming in debt.

I used to work in a grocery store. A lady came in one day bought some food, and paid with food stamps. She then went out to her car which was a brand new Mercedes SUV and drive away.

Reminds me of waiting in line behind a woman who was arguing with the cashier about the price of limes, 10/99 cents. The first one rang up 10 cents so the woman goes off about how she is being ripped off. The cachier explains that the tenth lime will riing up for 9 cents bringing the total to 99 cents. The woman continues to bitch about it until the cashier shows her the receipt that she is only being charged the 99 cents. She pays with food stamps, and then proceeds to buy two cartons of Marlboros.

Why is it ridiculous to want to own something nice?

Do you understand what "the projects" are? Government-subsidized housing for people who can't afford to live on their own. If you can afford a brand new luxury car, you can afford to move out of the projects. Or at least you should be saving that money so you CAN move out of the projects.

But in reality, the cars were paid for from illegal cash transactions, so on paper they can't really afford to move out of the projects.

Interesting dynamic I noticed in some areas where I live. One night, I was sitting at a red light in "the hood" and noticed in the run-down POS house next to me, there was a MASSIVE TV on in the main room. Out of curiosity, when I drive through the really crappy neighborhoods/projects at night, I'll glance in to see if there is a TV on, 9 times out of 10, the worse the house/apt/neighborhood, the bigger the TV.

That guy is a crackhead if he makes $50k a year and can't afford to chip in for cable, internet, or a fridge. I make slightly more and I live by myself in a $1600 apartment in Downtown LA so I have no idea how he can not afford to even afford the basic necessity.

Conclusion, your roommate is a crackhead!

Everything goes fine, he pays for part of it and finances the rest. We set up delivery for a week down the road...day of comes around and since he plopped down so much cash I helped deliver the set in person. The guy lives directly off of 8 Mile in Detroit, maybe 3-4 blocks down the street. The TV is so large that it takes up nearly a sixth of his living room and the family is sitting literally 5' from the screen.

His house is worth no more than probably $75K (if that, I'm being generous) and he's got a TV that's 10% of its value. Maybe it's not WAY BEYOND his means...but seriously.

Was he black by any chance?

Was he a p1mp?

Me: I got a credit card to use to buy concert tickets online, and then just pay them off. Well, that didn't end up happening. I maxed out my credit card ($500) and now I have to pay it back, and when most of my paycheck goes to my other bills, I don't really know how I'm going to pay off the card without it taking more than a year.

Right now, ME.

Bank balance is $6.
CC balances are all at about 30% of the limit.
I'm out of food.
I'm out of toilet paper.
I need to buy textbooks.
My new job doesn't start for another 15 days. Hopefully this one lasts more than a few months without getting laid off.

And the crime knows no bounds :p

And the heat + humidity is suffocating.

I won't argue about the climate, but I've never had a problem with crime here.

Houston is a great town for young people getting started because it is so - damn - cheap!

EyeMWing is always bitching about EVERYTHING. I figured a guy with 12250+ posts on this forum would know that.

i really don't understand why so many people charge more than they can afford on their credit cards.

Are those people just real bad w/ math?

If you know you won't be able to pay the amount in full when the bill comes, why put it on your credit card? Does 20%+ interest really seem that appealing?

0% interest for 12 months. 0% interest for the life of the BT. Etc.

One day when CC companies no longer offer 0% interest/transfer, a lot of people will get burned. Never a good idea to spend what you don't have unless you try to run a business.
