Running a Toshiba Satellite X205 SLi2 -- came with windows vista from best buy... wondering if it can be downgraded down to XP, or could we say upgraded, vista doesnt work for me. Thanks!

well, you're in luck if you install XP Pro you'll be able to get the chipset drivers, I believe you'll need to make a boot floppy to install the SATA drivers so that XP can access the HDD to install tho.

If you mean "can I get an XP license for free," then the answer is yes if it has OEM Vista Business or OEM Vista Ultimate. If you do this, you can still go back to Vista later, too. how to use downgrade rights (PDF file)

Since most people shopping at Best Buy are probably buying Vista Home Premium, however, that might be a deal-breaker. But you can still pick up a WinXP license at Newegg and run it if you like. Do make sure you have your lappie's restoration discs, so you can revert it to Vista if/when you want to.

Some of the major OEM's offer XP cd's for certain models of their computers that came with Vista. If they are available for your model, there will probably be some cost involved. I have seen this cost be as low as pay for shipping, or as much as $70. You contact toshiba and see what they say.

Otherwise getting XP on some newer laptops can take some digging, as the OEM may not offer XP drivers for that model and you have to source out the drivers from the individual device makers, as in the video or sata drivers.

redbeard, intel has XP drivers for the chipset, and the video has XP drivers, the only hitch will be if the HDD is sata, I doubt XP will natively install without a driver disk.

OP, Toshiba offers a few of their laptops with XP Pro instead of Vista - so it looks as if they are responding to customers' demand. I would suggest taking redbeard1's suggestion and talk to Toshiba - they may help you.

have one of their, low end laptops with Vista Home, so I feel your pain, but after six months have gotten used to it.
