Store-Bought Grapes

What's the white cloudy residue on the skin of store-bought grapes? Pesticides? Should you wash grapes (and other fruits, for that matter) before you eat them?

😕

before you eat them.

My mom insists that you have to wash fruits before you eat them, so I was wondering if anyone else is like this.

My Mom always taught me to wash whatever produce you buy, whether it be from a store, a farmer's market, or your own garden. Chances are it's a pesticide, though they usually wash most everything off before it gets out to the consumer, and I usually see them rinse down the produce a couple times a day at the stores I go to.

Doesn't hurt to wash it, right? I doubt it will hurt you if you don't, but why take a chance if rinsing it is easy to do? 🙂

The confusion was because I find it hard to believe that anyone would consider not washing their fruits and vegetables. A majority of food poisoning comes from produce, not meats.

Gotcha. I was just thinking about not washing grapes because I'm lazy, and it's a pain to get the cloudy film off (probably wax, as Ryan stated).

I always rinse fruits with water, but does washing fruits = rubbing the surface clean?
