Here are a couple of the numbers Comparing the 120GB to the 80GB. I don't know why they chose not to list the 120 and the 80 within the review for the 120.

Read Service Time:
1200JB - 13.5ms
800JB - 13.9ms

Write Service Time:
1200JB - 14.3
800JB - 14.3

Transfer Rate Begin:
1200JB - 48.8
800JB - 49.3

Transfer Rate End:
1200JB - 29.2
800JB - 29.2

Forgot about two hot topics lately. Heat and noise...

Noise:

1200JB - 47.3dB
800JB - 45.0dB

Heat:

1200JB - 17.1 C
800JB - 15.3 C

The Seagate Barracuda IV is 41.3dB / 19.3C. Not enough of a sound difference to warrant a performance hit in my opinion.

Depends on the application. Keep in mind that dB is not a linear scale. Every 1dB increase is considerably "louder" than the number entails. There's a little more difference between, say, 41 and 45dB than you may realize.

The Barracuda IV's are silent. The WD's are not. For some people, that's enough right there. Depends on the application.

Yup, the dB scale isn't a linear one but a logarithmic one. Consider this, it takes a power amplifier twice as much power(wattage) to produce a 3dB increase in volume. This is to say, if a 100W amp can produce a max SPL of 100dB, it'd take a 200W designed in the same way with the same efficiency to produce 103dB. To the human ear, a perceived doubling of loudness is about a 6dB increase, so the 1200JB is roughly twice as loud as the Barracuda IV.

Of course, if we put things into context, the difference in final loudness, considering your CPU,power supply and case fans, will probably be negligible if you have some crazy cooling in your case like me :)
If however you want to create a quiet PC, with minimal usage of fans, the Barracuda IV would be the logical choice.

I installed my 800jb a couple of days ago. To put it simple its fast and virtually silent. I formatted one large partition in Win2k. Running KX7333 and XP1800+. I did some benching as well. For some reason Sandra just sucks for benching hard drives. So I used the old tried and true stand by Winbench 2.0. Needless to say it performed outstanding. Here are the numbers

Access time 13.6
Cpu percentage 1.63
Beginning Transfer 49000
End transfer 29200

And thats with virus and firewall running in the background. Its smooth as silk. :)
