I'm looking to get something like a Pelican case to store my camera equipment at home, and maybe double for when I need to carry a bunch of things to an event.

Is there any real alternative to the Pelican's? Well, mostly in regards to pricing, ha. I have an AW300 sling, got a good deal for it, but finding I'm overgrowing it for at home storage/carry all type thing.

What do you all do?

I keep most of my camera gear in my Kata R-103 backpack. It has just about everything I need to grab-and-go.

I get the impression that Pelican cases are designed for a little more than carrying or storing random assorted photo gear. The exception to this is if you're a roadie or traveling through some really harsh places.

I throw my bags in a gun safe at home. House got broken into a few months ago and I don't take chances anymore leaving equipment out in the open (I was lucky, had the important stuff with me).

Pelicans are good if you're shipping or traveling a lot, but they're a tad overkill for home storage and occasional use. I use bags for my camera gear, cases for lighting equipment, and lighting and sound bags for my lightstands and modifiers, but I'll probably consolidate my lighting equipment into those groovy rolling cases like the Kata's and Tenba's next year.

Same as virtuamike. My camera bag and lenses goes into the safe unless I'm doing something with them. For on the road use, its a combination of one of hte sections of a backpack along with a shoulder/belt pack I use.

hrm, never really thought about a safe.. how large is your gun safe mike? I'd wager pretty large if you want to stuff your bag in there? and thus, fairly expensive?

maybe i'll just get a second bag for the lighting stuff, heh.

It's a decent size. Picked it up at Costco, about $400. It's bolted into the ground :)
