Storage of emails

Since 2001, I've used PST files in MS Outlook (currently 2007), to store emails, I'm involved with many things, many various sports, many various businesses, emails from family and friends, etc, etc and so, the number (and sizes) of PST's have grown enormously, where there's currently in the region of 20 PST files, holding in total, many millions of emails, (all of the PST files are within the 2GB limit).

Things are now going slower and slower, plus Outlook has a big delay in closing, so causing issues when the desktop has to be closed before Outlook has properly closed - because of this, I'm now looking for something that is very robust and reliable. What do you use to store your emails please?

I had similar issues because of the imap email server having limited space. So, every year or so, I create a new archive file in Outlook and erase all the messages on the imap server. The archives are separate pst files that are fully accessible in Outlook (but not in the main inbox) and that can be backed up on a different drive. Outlook then works with the active pst file which is of manageable size.
