Storage Drive "Location 0" and "Location 1"

I just found out today that my 3 month old Sandy Bridge laptop has the dreaded Intel HM65 revision B2 southbridge. As far as I'm aware, this only affects SATA ports 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Windows 7 picks up my HDD as Location 0 and my optical as Location 1. Does this mean it is using SATA ports 0 and 1? Thanks!

Contact your notebook manufacturer. They should replace it at no charge to you.

It is important to note that the SATA ports 0 and 1 (those that can operate in SATA 6 Gb) are not affected by this bug, which is therefore limited to SATA ports 2, 3, 4 and 5. They are considered first, and if you need to connect more devices you should use an additional SATA controller, integrated or not with the mainboard. The easiest course is to defer the purchase of configurations Sandy Bridge.

You are using ports 0 and 1 and should be OK. I would demand a replacement. They shouldn't have an issue as Intel is footing the bill.

just out of curiosity, when did you buy this laptop? i ask because if you just recently bought it in the last 30 days, this should have never been obtainable from any retailer at this point in SB's life.

unless you just had the lazy factor and never cared to look until now, but bought it early this year. in which case, that's perfectly understandable.

Another point is you should not use software to check whether your PC contains the bug. Software are known to be unreliable in detecting it.

I really don't believe that has anything to do with the actual MB ports being used.

I have to look in the BIOS to see the actual numbered ports on the MB being used.

Not only that, you're using a laptop MB which is completely different than anything used in desktops.

An update to my story. I dug deeper and checked with Intel's Storage Manager software and the Gigabyte software to check which SATA ports were being used. Unfortunately, port 3 is used by my optical drive. Nevertheless, when I checked my serial number with Acer's website, they say my laptop is fine and requires no servicing. This is weird and I really would welcome advice on my next course of action.

To answer Nanaki, laptop was bought on 23rd of May 2011. Laptop was manufactured in Feb 2011. I only came across this issue by chance when looking for ways to undervolt a Core i5-M.
