Stopping Windows Messenger auto-login

How can I stop Windows messenger from automatically logging in whenever I start Outlook Express? I unchecked the auto sign-in option, but for some reason it still occasionally logs in anyway. I looked through every option I could find. Is there some registry value I can add, delete, or change? I'd like to still be able to access Windows messenger from Start menu if I ever need it. Thanks.

If you don't even use Window Messenger at all, here is a tweak to get rid of it.
Go to Start --> Run and type this in (Without the " ")
" RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove "
It will ask if you are sure you want to remove messenger, select yes. There it's gone.

Thanks. I do use Windows messenger sometimes, but if it keeps logging me in, I may have to do that and uninstall it.

In the registry, you could try deleting IdentityName related to the email address you use for WinMsgr in one of the messengerService folders (can't remember which one...just do a search). Not completely sure that it will work, tho', I'm going off something I heard somewhere and have never verified myself, so proceed at your own risk (if worse comes to worse, you can just downlaod and re-install Messenger anyway)

Isn't Windows Messenger just like MSN Messenger? If it is, just go to... Tools | Options | Preferences Tab, and uncheck the box that tells MSN Messenger to start with Windows.

Jeff, all that does is prevent Messenger from auto-starting when Windows loads (any OS). "Remembered password" is completely different.

Bump.

Looking for a way to do this also. I am on an old computer and don't want Messenger loading automatically when I launch OE but can't find a way for it to allow me to choose whether or not it does.

You can't easily stop Messenger from loading when you launch OE. Same when logging into Hotmail.

I believe there is a registry string you can add in HKCU\Identities\{number}\software\microsoft\outlook express\X.0\Rules to stop Messenger from loading with OE, but I can't find it right now. I'll update if I can find it.

In the meantime, you could try here, and here. Please note, do it wrong, and OE will take until next year to load every time you launch it. Also, if you're a novice with the Registry, back it up before you do squat with it, 'k?

My suggestion? Get rid of Messenger and download Trillian. It'll do your MSN Messaging, PLUS AOL IM, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, and it's an IRC client. It's also skinnable so you can almost definately make it look better than MSN Messenger.
