This is for Windows but it's an Apple product and this is the 'all things apple' forum so I'm sticking it here.

Like many others I'm getting prompted to install Safari as part of an autoupdate though I don't have Safari installed now. It's automatically selected and I have to deselect it when Itunes needs updating.

Is there a way to permanently block the Safari install? Between my work pc, work laptop, home pc and home laptop and the Itunes 7.6.2 update recently along w the random times it decides to try to install Safari it seems I've been running a war against Apple's efforts to install Safari lately. Is there a way to block the update so it stops friggin trying to do it?

I tried that and it doesn't prevent the next update from trying to install it unfortunately.

A funny idea, but also a bad one. QuickTime is ubiquitous enough that it gets targeted by malware authors a lot. There's a good chance your machine could get exploited if it's not kept up to date.

Thanks, I didn't even notice that there are options to ignore update. I'd remove Apple Update altogether, but there are always fears that they might put new drivers up there, like the much-awaited tap click...

Bootcamp FTL?

Yes, but will 2 finger scrolling and right clicking still work?

so that's how Safari got onto my PC. I was wondering when it got installed. Either way though, I never use it. Firefox FTMFW.

Boo creepy lack of 2 finger-ness. I can live without tap clicking then.

My brother installed it a few days ago without knowing that he did until icons popped up on the desktop. He thought it was an update when he installed it (we only have QuickTime), without realizing it's a completely new program. I am a major Firefox fan, and he's a major IE7 fan.

This was an evil move on Apple's part. Software updates should be for existing products only, not a method for deploying new software. They've violated people's trust and they really should have their hand slapped for this.

FIXED.

http://www.macnn.com/articles/...software.update.fixed/

Following considerable public criticism, Apple has release a new version of its Software Update utility for Windows, bringing it to v2.1. The patch is available through the current version of Software Update -- bundled with programs such as iTunes -- and addresses an earlier policy of Apple, under which Safari 3.1 would be pushed to Windows users whether they wanted it or not, as if they had already downloaded the application previously. Some have accused Apple of trying to artificially improve the distribution of the Safari web browser in the Windows sphere.

Safari continues to appear as a default checked item in Update 2.1, but has been moved to the "New Software" category, and so is readily identifiable as non-essential. New versions of Safari should now also stop triggering the automatic appearance of Software Update, unless users do in fact already have an earlier edition.

who uses quicktime? there are alternatives both for windows and i'm sure for mac as well. quicktime is slow, resource consuming, and personally, i hate it.

Quicktime isn't a bad player, in OS X. I haven't noticed anything terrible about it on the Mac side. I've had more issues with Windows Media Player than I've ever had with Quicktime. Of course, I'm comparing WMP (in Windows) to QT (in OS X). QT in Windows isn't a player that I would choose, as it is bloated.

movie trailers look pretty damn good in Quicktime.

loads of WMV videos are blocky and can't be paused well; and when they resume, pic and sound are out of sync. 'sup wit dat?
