Stop Telemarketers Free - Nationwide Via Web or Phone -- See previous sticky thread. AT Mod

Not that anyone would actually complain about being put on the Do Not Call list, but that doesn't seem like a very secure way of doing things. Seems like I could just enter anyone's number and my own e-mail address and get them on the list whether they wanted to or not.

I did this a while ago but today I got called by 5 telemarkets in an hour, that was EXTREMILY annoying, I dun care that much if i get 1 a month, but damn when their stuipid machines loop on ur phones it's a pain!

I don't think enforcement of the national do-not-call list starts until 10/03.

I have a feeling there will be some offshore company who will abuse the "Do not call" list and use it to procure valid telephone #s. So if you're only getting a telemarketing call once every blue moon, you might want to hold off on signing up. But if you already get a few telemarketing calls a day, nothing to lose in signing up.

There are quite a few "exemptions" to this list people should know about. This will not stop all calls:

Exemptions from the list include calls from charities, pollsters and on behalf of politicians. Registered consumers also can give written permission to get calls from certain companies.

A company also may call someone on the no-call list if that person has bought, leased or rented from the company within the past 18 months. Telemarketers also may call people if they have inquired about or applied for something from the company during the past three months.

I tried to sign up, but the site wouldn't come up ... it must be getting a lot of people signing up!

Although it won't matter too much to me, I've subscribed to 'Privacy Manager' and I've only gotten about 3 telemarketing calls in the past 5 years.

Given the cost of international phone calls, I doubt this would happen. How many out-of-country calls do you get now? Unless you know someone overseas, not many...and even then, because rates to call into the US are often higher than to call from the US, it's a rare thing. In the two years my parents were over in Germany, I don't think they ever called. I called several times, though, when the time of day was favorable...it would've been at least 2-3x more expensive for them to call me than for me to call them. Telemarketing calls from another country would cost more than they're worth.

That said, it looks like the registry's website is undergoing the mother of all slashdottings right now. On the radio on the way in to work, CBS News reported that they were taking on over 100 phone numbers every second. I'm getting a "connection reset by peer" error when I click the "submit" link.

POTS international calls may be expensive - But VOIP are cheap. Where do you think you're calling for customer service most of the time? India or the Phillipines...

"Customer service"? What's that? 😛

Consumers can register for the free government service by visiting the Web site www.donotcall.gov. Telephone registration using a toll-free number - 1-888-382-1222 - is available in states west of the Mississippi River, including Minnesota and Louisiana, the Federal Trade Commission said. Nationwide registration should be available by July 7.

Couldn't get thru on the web, called the 1-888 number and got right in, but I am on the West Coast.

yeah...i've tried going to this a bunch of times today and it's always been down. maybe they didn't realize what a complete pain in the ass telemarketers are....time for the government to get a couple more web servers for their site.
