Shoppers find market open

By Maureen Boyle, Brockton Enterprise staff writer
BROCKTON ? The Stop & Shop on Belmont Street was officially closed Thanksgiving Day but that didn't stop a handful of determined last-minute shoppers.

Two officers responding to a burglar alarm at the market discovered shoppers in the aisles and others carrying out bags of food.

"Someone at Stop & Shop left the front doors unlocked but they set the alarm," Sgt. Donald Mills said.

When the alarm went off at 9:57 a.m., officers Mike Darrah and John Luce responded and got a bit of a surprise when they arrived.

"People were shopping," Mills said. "People were inside, pushing carriages around, shopping."

Some shoppers even left money on the counter when they got tired of waiting for someone to ring up their purchases, Mills said.

"There were honest people there," he said.

Mills said shoppers were surprised when they were told to leave.

"They were just floored that the supermarket was closed," he said.

A Stop & Shop representative was called to the store to lock it up, Mills said.
