Stop Renaming EXTENSION when Renaming File???

This just started about 2 weeks ago....For some reason when I rename a file, it now wants to rename the extension with it for some reason? How can I make this how it was before, to just rename the file, and leave the extension in tact? Thanks!

explorer /tools/folder options/check/view tab/check hide extensions for know file types or whatever it is

That is the way to do it, but personally, I think it is a bad idea. My experience tells me it is always good to be in control of those things - I don't trust computers that much. The wrong extension can cause you problems.

When renaming includes the extension, it is not necessary to highlight the extension. Highlight from right to left begining at the dot, and thus only change the name, but you can visually verify the extension as being correct.

Yea, that's something that's bugged me about explorer recently. Most of the time you want to leave the extension alone so it makes no sense to select the whole filename by default, luckily Nautilus does the right thing and just selects the name when you hit rename.

How I love nautilus in this situation, it'll only highlight the name, as you've mentioned.

Windows Vista now does this as well. When you tell it to rename the file ONLY the name is highlighted...

Filename.ext like this.

Nice to see MS copying more stuff from Linux.

I'm sure it goes both ways. That's how the business world works, building off of good ideas. It's almost flattering.

But MS is supposed to be a leader and innovator and yet 2 of the biggest changes in explorer were copied almost directly from Nautilus.
