stop me from buying this TV today.. (yadlpt)

3d is lame - skip it completely - does squaretrade cover the bulbs? you won't be lucky every time. i was hoping some sort of pure laser DLP would eventually come out soon. i've had to be the bearer of bad news (no sir the bulb is not available anywhere for 6 months backorder) plenty of time for dlp and projectors (some even share the same bulb).

don't buy it for 3D whatever you do. activer shutter sucks. if you want 3D - wait for passive shutter to figure itself out. the glasses that came with my 60PX950 have been used ONCE and avatar was still painful.

Good to know about the 3d. 3d is a distant reason to purchase for me. My receiver is only hdmi 1.3a so I would need to upgrade that, buy the glasses, etc. I'm mainly more interested in the size first, PQ second, and overall wow factor. its 11 inches diagonal more than my 62 which would make it an absolute monster. I might need to invest in a different TV stand as well..

so you don't want to rock a plasma? 2" thick? no need to stand it? or just size?

i was curious what benefits dlp has over modern plasma other than size which we can agree dlp is cheaper.

I do understand when i upgraded my 42" to 60" - it was crystal clear that i would be sad with anything smaller or the same size. i get that 100% . gotta go bigger!

I've been eyeing it for a couple weeks. I currently have a 62 inch dlp (circa 2005ish) that I think I can get a few hundred for. This new one is 1080p, has a better picture, is 3d capable, and is a killer price for 73 inches. I'd also buy a 3 year square trade warranty for $125.00

decisions decisions...

I'll save you the argument - BUY IT!

I just got my parents the 60" version of that. It's *unbelievably* good. Let's just say that I am totally blown away by the image quality coming out of this thing. I've talked to my wife already about selling our 42" LCD and Front Projector and just snagging one of these. As I mentioned in the Hot Deals thread, I've only seen one TV better than the this - the 50" Pioneer Kuro plasma for $4,000. And I think this has it beat on skintones.

I had no idea that DLPs were this great. In the past they were dim and had poor viewing angles, but the new one is plenty bright and I only see the color shift at extreme viewing angles (there's a chair, a loveseat, and a couch in my parent's setup and the color is perfect from all seats!). Not only that, but it's a sharp-looking television - nice thin bezel, all-black design, and less than 20" deep. My parents have it in the corner of their room and it sits right up against the two walls and actually looks like a flatscreen since you can't see the curved back, so it just looks like a giant corner-mounted flatscreen TV.

I've read that the 3D is actually pretty good. You need a $400 kit to get it working though - Mitsubishi has a starter kit that includes the IR emitter bits and a couple pairs of glasses.

I would recommend a separate speaker system. The onboard speakers are fairly crummy. Well, not crummy - they're just TV speakers, you know? I setup my parents with a 5.1 set of Logitech Z-5500's, which is really simple to setup & operate and has nice small speakers to put around the room.

I like DLP because (1) the picture quality of these Mitsubishi sets beats every plasma I've seen except the Kuro, and (2) the bulbs are replaceable, which is great when the picture starts to fade (I think you can replace LCD bulbs, but with plasmas I think you're pretty much hosed and just have to buy a new TV). Also (3) huge picture for cheap!

Plasmas have no bulbs as stated above. I need a stand to mount all my stuff in and dont want to mount this on anything. 60" is too small and any lcd or plasma in the 70 inch range is ungodly expensive. I have the Energy Take 5's with a tSc 12 inch sub and its plenty of sound for the basement I'm in (another good reason to get DLP). Last fall Mitsubishi had a promo going on where you could get the 3d kit for free with purchase. Wish they would come back with that because it would save me a chunk of change. Thats probably the only thing keeping me on the fence right now. I agree with the PQ though. These newer DLP sets are gorgeous.

Surely you can't be serious.

Have you, personally, seen a calibrated, latest-generation Mitsubishi DLP in person? I had not, prior to the 60" set my parents have. Before that, I had zero love for rear projection televisions - I had never seen one I had even remotely liked before. This is a totally different animal that what I'm used to. So good, in fact, that I'm probably going to sell my Mitsubishi HD projector to pick one up  I'm super picky about video quality and I can't believe I'm recommending an RPTV to people now, but the new Mitsu DLP's are just that good.

Yeah I thought the bulbs would be a down-side until I realized that they're a third the cost of my projector bulbs ($99 vs. $300) and you can revitalize your TV image over time by popping a new bulb in, instead of just letting it fade like a plasma.

I'm considering the 73" for my parents - I don't have the room right now for the larger model but could swap them out since the 60" would fit in my hutch just fine. But the 60" is so large I don't think they have the room for it either

Couldn't pay me to take a dlp.

You don't know what you are missing out on. Price/size they are the best value out there and PQ is better than LCD and rivals that of Plasma imho. In the end, its all just opinion.

Some people get sick from the dlp wheel 🙂 anyways. size you can't beat that price. size does matter. totally agree. no point in arguing that. sounds like you want what you want and that price seems great for that size. go for it.

just skip 3D. don't waste $1 on it.

If you have the room for it, I'd go for it. Other than that, I'm not sure why one would go for a DLP at this stage with how cheap plasmas are and being able to throw them up on the wall.

I like my Mitsubishi DLP. I can't remember which model I have (it's one of the 65" models), but I kinda wish I would've went with a 73" instead. I just have so much bare wall around my TV! Also, in regard to the 3D, you would be able to do it just fine with a 1.3 receiver and a converter kit. The thing is that the converter kit would have to go between each 3D device and the receiver to avoid any weird issues with being unable to pick up the audio (blu-ray's frame packing method) or transfering the 3D EDID. The converter is $100 alone and you only get 1 per kit.

DLP's are great for the price but every single one I've seen, the viewing angle are terrible. I don't know it it's just that the ones that Fry's has are really old models but the viewing angles really are bad.

Yeah, the old ones were terrible. The new Mitsu DLP's are really great - you have to go to very extreme angles to get the color shift. That was the first thing I tested after plugging my parent's 60" DLP in this week. Huge improvement over the old ones.

I didn't get it. I decided to wait for a deal when the 3d stuff is free with it, or a better price on the 73738 model. Its a little higher end than the C10.

keep checking out plasma for deals. 60-65 - the viewing angles are insane and the 1-2" depth makes mounting a reality

yeah i do understand. once i saw the 2" depth and 1" frame on the LG and that a 60" could fit in what typically is a 54-55" size tv fits - i wanted 60" at no costs. i totally get it. you don't feel like you are getting an upgrade at all if its a few inches.

Probably what the women think too huh? What's an extra inch when they can get 4?
