wow, no posts supporting the raising of the fines yet

i want the fines raised because i think it is funny

big corps are about money and they will change the programming to avoid paying out big $

it cracks me up

also, some of the big radio corps are changing the policy so that the "radio personality" is liable for 1/2 of the fine. that cracks me up too

How can you possibly find all of this funny? I don't care about the last one, maybe the djays should be responsible for some of the fine, but this is all just a stupid knee jerk reaction from idiots that don't realize what those knobs on the radio are for.

Duly noted and edited. Please spread the word about the petition - this is on the level, and to me this is one of the most important political issues to emerge in my 33 years.

Did I say doomed? No, don't think I did (although I guess it is possible...). If you don't like what he is saying, TURN THE STATION or TURN IT OFF. Simple. Why should I limit what I can say or be limited in what I can listen to because some idiot 30 miles from me can't get it through his head that he doesn't have to listen to it. Simple solutions for simple problems. Don't punish me (and I don't like Howard Stern, he isn't funny anymore) because irresponsible people keep spreading everyone's favorite sexually transmitted disease.

I don't consider it an "extremist" position to stick up for civil rights. As far as I can see the extremist position is that of the federal government, which is taking a hardline, religious-right perspective toward censorship of broadcasting. I won't argue further with you, since you appear to be trolling. PM me if you want more discussion on the subject.

Just to clarify, I don't think it's necessarily right that the government has become the morality police. Parent's should be raising their kids, not leaving it to the government.
One of the problems is with both parents working these days, or single parent households, these parents don't have the time anymore to devote to their kids so they don't notice that little Johnny is downloading donkey pr0n off the net.
Mind you there are a plethora of other problems too and this is only one of them.

Should the government be the morality police? No. However there are many many people who feel they should be.

You live in a country where what is displayed in public or through the public's means is goverened by "contemporary coummity standards." If you look at the law books, most every state or locality will have a law referencing obscene material and broadcasts. Usually defining obscene something like this:

1. The average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find appeals to the prurient interest if taken as a whole;

2. Under contemporary community standards, describes or shows sexual conduct in a patently offensive way; and

3. Lacks serious literary, artistic, political, educational or scientific value, if taken as a whole.


This means that radio and tv broadcasts over the air need to follow these standards as they are done through public communication channels. So even taking away the FCC it would leave it up to every state to press charges against those stations airing the material.

Educate yourself. The main proponent of this FCC crackdown inside the FCC is Michael Copps. Bush has not even uttered a dozen words about this entire issue.
