STOP ERRORS ON WINDOWS INSTALL

My friend (which knows nothing about computers) was having horrible problems with Win98SE locking up everytime he did anything on the computer. So I just told him to get WinXP Pro in which case he did. He brought it over so I could format NTFS and then install WinXP pro. Everytime I got to the formatting stage of the install I got to about 2% done and then I got a "Stop" error. This requires a hard boot to restart and you basically have to start over. I immediately thought that his hard drive had bad sectors or something so we went and got a new hard drive and it got all the way through formatting the Maxtor 60 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, but when it was copying files it then got a stop error everytime. I do not understand what it could be now. I swapped memory that was not it. Any ideas? Its an older AMD K6-2 probly 450Mhz with a via chipset. I'm just trying to help my buddy out, the computer was bought off of the Home Shopping Network so you know they know nothing about computers. Let me know if you have any ideas, thanks.

Check the ram. I had a lot of problems I thought were hard drive related and it turned out to be ram. Test the hard drive with the manufacturer's utuility and try memtest 86 for the ram. Available for download here, just click on memory test info. Good luck, of course it could be a lot of other things, too. But this was my most recent fix.

Hya, i had the same problem too. But i would try installing it about 3 times and it would complete it. Even during use, i get alot of 'registery error'. Microsoft annouced that some versions of their XP was dort of 'defective'. I am not sure were i read it but i don't think there is a fix for it yet.

Humm, link?

got $$$ on the ram. i've had the problem. friends too. seems that XP install is very hard on memory.
good luck

A couple of things to try.

1) Fdisk and Format the Hard drive with a Windows boot disk instead of XP - Just to see if, during the format, there are any problems... i.e. lockups, bad sectors. Windows XP hides these things 🙂

2) Make sure that the hard drive is properly setup in BIOS.

3) Open the case, after it's been on for a while, and see if it's really hot inside. (overheating CPU?)

4) You say you tried different memory... was it new memory or did you swap it with old memory? Do you know for sure that the memory you swapped is good and the correct type?

I have had problems with the ram also (got bluescreens though), I have also have had problems with CD roms try a new one or different one!
