...and why do we park on driveways and drive on parkways? It's crazy!

This isn't a question of semantics. The world designation wasn't added by accident.

Er...the only event you listed that had world in the tile was 'world series' which got that title when nobody else in the world outside of the US played baseball anyway, so it effectively WAS a world series.

Exactly my point. Professional sports leagues should not be able to designate their winning teams as "World Champions". There are competitions for this.

Yes, but in a league you are actually a team. In the olympics you are just representing your country. Since the NBA is the best league of actual professional teams in the world, then the champions would then be declared world champions.

no team from outside of the States (maybe North America) is competing.

The World Series is not a World championship
The Super Bowl is not a World championship
The NBA title is not a World championship
The Stanley Cup is not a World championship

The World Cup of Soccer is a World Championship
The World Cup of Rugby is a World Championship
The World Cup of Hockey is a World Championship

I was listening to ESPN this morning and they referred to the Collegiate World Championship of Baseball. What's the bet no team from outside of the States is competing.

/thread

The World Series is the worst and only blatant offender in this. I'm sure ESPN or others might add "World" into other sport championships, but Baseball went and put it into the name of the actual event.

Myopitism(sp) causes people to think strange things, "World Series" is one of those things.

Very true, but the players, commentators and fans typically refer to the champs as "World Champs". This is where I have a problem.

Have you even been following baseball? USA stunk up the World Baseball Classic and if you haven't noticed, the MLB is full of foreign-born players.

Exactly, all of the worthwhile players from everywhere else in the world come to the US (and Canada) to play baseball, hockey, basketball, and American football. So in a sense you could call it a world championship. 😉

[Dude, you can't take a team of stars and say "go play in the olympics".
I agree with this. Too many international teams (especially in hockey) have been playing together too long to be beaten by a team of superstars all playing as individuals.

The 2004 Detroit Pistons would have easily beaten the team that they sent that year...as would have the 2002 Lakers.
I think these teams would have faired better, but I don't know that they would have easily won. They would have been the overwhelming favourites, but sports is sports and they play the game for a reason. If they did win these years, then I agree we could have called them world champions.

Besides, you're tlaking about the olympics, we're talking about a professional sports league.

What about the time they sent MJ and all those guys. They kicked @55 and took names.

Except: Japan, S Korea, Cuba, and probably many more.

The only Team sport US really dominates is Men's Basketball.

Didn't you guys finish 6th or something last Olymics?

In soccer a lot of the professional teams (Man U, Arsenal, Barcelona, Milan, etc....) could beat a lot of the international teams that win the World Cup. The top tier teams have international starters for the best in the world on the bench when positions overlap.

They still have a World Cup and only designate one team a world champion.

That was quite a show wasn't it 🙂. The won the final game by like 30 points or so.

They were the world champs and they earned it.

Are you saying that the champions in those those four sports would be given a run for their money by another off-shore team?

The notion that Olympic competition correlates to one of these champions is laughable.

Let's take the Basketball for instance, the team is assembled from only those multimillionaires willing to work for nothing. It is put together at the last moment and has no ability to work out it's kinks over a normal season.

I say assemble your team from the rest of the world and give the teams a reason to play ($$$$!) and the champs from those 4 sports (NBA, NFL etc.) would dominate.

Just because they take place in the US and include teams stationed in the US does not mean it isn't a world championship. The best players in the world play for the NBA, NHL, etc. The team that won the olymptic basketball gold had as its star a player who plays for the Spurs. Even that team would stand no chance against the worst team in the NBA, IMO.

You're trying to force nationalism into a sport before it qualifies as a world championship, and it's stupid.

That's more reasonable. By that standard, Football should probably be off your list too, as I'm not aware of a better world competetion.

As for basketball and hockey, you could make a case for the olympics, but regular teams don't compete in those, so it's essentially an isolated league. If that's the case then hockey which is mostly north american and basketball (which IDK if it's popular outside of NA) are both 'world champions' in a limited sense as well.

Again, it's debatable but not completely unjustified.

Douche.

The best baseball players in the world compete in the World Series, not just Americans. The same could be said about hockey and basketball.
