Stop calling it World when....

no team from outside of the States (maybe North America) is competing.

The World Series is not a World championship
The Super Bowl is not a World championship
The NBA title is not a World championship
The Stanley Cup is not a World championship

The World Cup of Soccer is a World Championship
The World Cup of Rugby is a World Championship
The World Cup of Hockey is a World Championship

I was listening to ESPN this morning and they referred to the Collegiate World Championship of Baseball. What's the bet no team from outside of the States is competing.

Because it's obvious no team from another country can compete. Seriously, we don't even come close to sending our best basketball players to the olympics...in fact we used to send college players.

Is this supposed to be a rant?

I've never heard anyone call the Stanley Cup playoffs a world championship.

You're right you did so well at the 2002 World Championships (which is a World competition) with your 6th place finish, but no worries you did better at the 2004 Olympics (which is a World competition) by finishing 3rd.

You've shown me.

Maybe not, but I have heard the eventual champions called World Champions which presupposes it is a world competition.

Probably because the MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL are the most elite leagues in their respective sport?

I am not arguing that, but that doesn't mean the team who wins these leagues should be designated as "World Champs".

As the American teams have seen, there is a lot of work in rising to the top of an International stage and this achievement shouldn't be trivialised.

No other country dare compete against the USA in baseball!

You're right they had such a good showing. Maybe next time they can get closer to a medal.

heh..don't forget that Japan won that World Baseball Classic. Sure, some never took the WBC seriously but the US didn't look good at all and some would say the umpires helped them in the tourney.

Have you even been following baseball? USA stunk up the World Baseball Classic and if you haven't noticed, the MLB is full of foreign-born players.

As the Detroit Pistons (and many other teams) have demonstrated, the best team isn't made up of the best players. It is made of the players who play best together.

Basketball is filled with too many superstars who are too selfish to share the limelight. Iverson should never make any American team competing for a world championship.

"It's only practice." Bah

Dude, you can't take a team of stars and say "go play in the olympics". It doesn't work. The 2004 Detroit Pistons would have easily beaten the team that they sent that year...as would have the 2002 Lakers.

Besides, you're tlaking about the olympics, we're talking about a professional sports league.

I agree with this. Too many international teams (especially in hockey) have been playing together too long to be beaten by a team of superstars all playing as individuals.

I think these teams would have faired better, but I don't know that they would have easily won. They would have been the overwhelming favourites, but sports is sports and they play the game for a reason. If they did win these years, then I agree we could have called them world champions.

Exactly my point. Professional sports leagues should not be able to designate their winning teams as "World Champions". There are competitions for this.

Except: Japan, S Korea, Cuba, and probably many more.

The only Team sport US really dominates is Men's Basketball.
