Problem:
About two weeks ago I upgraded and/or replaced various components on my computer with new ones (the spec list below identifies new and old parts). The computer works fine except for one problem. While surfing on the Internet (the only browser installed is IE6.0 with the Microsoft?s latest updates), the computer crashes with the following error:
Stop 0x0000007F(00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000)
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
The first thing to note that is problem showed up after the hardware changes were made.
The second thing to note is that this crash is the only problem experienced since the hardware changes.
The third thing to note is that the crash occurs ONLY while surfing on the Internet.
The crash occurs at the moment I click on a link. Surfing on CNN.com has generated many BSOD?s. The crashes are random, as I have not yet nailed down a specific pattern while troubleshooting. I have noticed that crashes tend to occur on the more complex websites (ActiveX controls, scripts, etc) as opposed to the simpler websites but not always. I have researched Microsoft?s websites as well as other resources and have tried a number of different things but to no avail. Below is an example of some the information I have encountered along the way:
Values Meaning
0x00000000 Divide by Zero Error
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q137539
I have re-installed VIA drivers, backed down to older versions of the drivers, tried to the latest drivers, etc. I have tried using various tools (from Websites like Sysinternals, etc.) to try and capture information as to what is going on within the computer at the moment of blue screen but the information gleaned has not revealed the culprit(s). In regards to memory, even though the two new sticks of memory have a taller profile than the original single stick, I know that memory is not the problem because I twice carried out a test where I removed the new sticks and used ONLY the original stick (along with the other new components) and I was to reproduce the crash: There was no change in the crash behavior. Am leaning towards a theory that the motherboard somehow does not like the hardware changes I made but I have not been able to either prove or disprove it conclusively. The hard drives are the only new items that I have not removed in my testing because they already contain production content. The suite of software on the computer (re-installed of course) is the same as what was present before the changes were made.
Questions:
What is causing my problem?
Are there any additional troubleshooting ideas?
Has anyone experienced this problem and if so, what is the solution?
Any assistance is welcome.
