Stop 0x00000050 BSOD in Windows XP

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop of a friends and it started giving a BSOD error recently. The computer will boot up and get to the desktop, but I cannot do anything with it because the hard drive is running (some app or apps are running from the bootup) and before it finally releases the computer I get a BSOD. The error is 0x00000050. At the bottom of the error screen it is listing windrvr.sys as part of the issue. I have found some things related to this error and Windows XP and updating to SP1. This computer is running Windows XP SP3, so don't think it is related to SP1. I can get into Safe Mode with no problems.

Here is my question...how can I track down what is causing this error? I cannot get into the regular desktop to run something like Process Explorer. So, I need some way figure out what is causing this. I have run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode and it found nothing. I installed SpeedFan in Safe Mode to check the hard drive, it will install, but it will not detect any hardware in Safe Mode.
 
Is there any reason you can't just wipe the OS and start over? This is going to be an extremely tricky BSOD to pin down, as windrvr.sys can basically be anything from drivers to a hardware failure. I'm really not sure it's going to be worth the time and effort if it's a software problem.

In any case it would be a good idea to do a basic hardware sanity check before mucking with your software. Memtest86 is a good place to start.
