Cinco de Mayo was about the Mexicans celebrating who they were in their culture. why do you think it is celebrated almost worldwide
Their independence was declared on September 16 not May 5th.
Just thought i would clear up any confusion

Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of a victory over France in their war for independence, a war they didn't win until September. The battle was a major turning point because it was one of the first they actually won.

There is a huge post floating around explaining the difference.

Just another reason to party.

<< The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The Fifth Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. >>

It IS about independence. It's not independence day, but it still celebrates a victory in the war for independence.

mexico was independent from spain in 1810, which is the september date. may 5 is the day they beat the french army that was occupying the place after france, england, and spain went in to collect debts.

All of the "REAL" Mexicans I know either know little about it or don't give a rats @ss. They feel it is kinda of a silly holiday that we picked to celebrate.

My Spanish teacher told me that it's celebrated more in Texas/California than it is in Mexico...dunno if it's true or not, but interesting.

It's a REGIONAL Mexican thing.

<< The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The Fifth Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, but is also celebrated in other parts of the country and in U.S.cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16. >>
