Stools too big and hard - anal fissures - ouch!

    I noticed recently my stools seem to be very thick and hard. It takes a bit of extra effort to push it out, but mostly because of the anticipated pain. Once I give it a good force it comes out like a bullet and very cleanly. Only issue is the instant pain when it comes out, and the blood. The good thing is they're very clean so I only have to wipe the blood and I'm done wiping, so there's less irritation in that sense.

    I'm guessing this may be diet related. What are things I should eat / avoid so I can stop this? If it persists I'll see a doctor but I have a good feeling the fix is a simple diet modification. I've been trying to eat more fiber but maybe I'm still not eating enough. (nuts, beans, etc)

    Eating fiber alone is a good first step, but it is also important to maintain adequate hydration as well, because the fiber wont get very soft without pulling some water out of your circulatory system and in the fight of fiber vs. body, the body is obviously going to win out in keeping the water. Try going with just fiber and lots of liquids(i.e. water) for the next few days to a week and confirm for yourself that this is purely a dietary/hydration problem.

    If you're too lazy to stick to a mostly fiber diet, you can supplement with cups of miralax(available over the counter) mixed into food or drink too.

    I'll try more water and see how that goes. Come to think of it I've been drinking lot of pepsi lately. I should cut down and replace with water.

    take a Magnesium supplement.

    Fiber and water help, but a stool softener like Dulcolax(Bisacodyl) occasionally (once a week?) may help making things less hard.

    stop the soda entirely, and caffeine, like in coffee. Take some psyllium powder or flax seeds for fiber. Drink water in fluid ounces equal to half your body weight in pounds over the course of the entire day. Your body will thank you.

    I used to be a big soda junkie and I've cheated once in a while and still have it, it makes me want to drink less water (even though I need more) and I have had some similar problems. Usually it was coke that would always mess up my stools, not pepsi, coke has more phosphoric acid. but it's all bad stuff. Cut it out.

    I've been eating right for so long now I am loving how good my poops are. Seriously, every time I poop I am so proud it isn't painful or unhealthy. Keeps me motivated to stay away from junk foods.

    I had this problem when I was fasting during Ramadan, because of lack of fibre and water.

    Except even with as much force as I can muster, it would take forever to come out and was rock hard.

    So glad fasting is over this year...

    When I have to take a crap yes it is! Otherwise it is a pain in the stomach all day.

    Not to get into any details, but I had the same problem when my fiber consumption was very low. The simple solution is to eat more fruit and veggies and, like others have said, stay hydrated. That completely alleviated any problems I had. If I slacked on eating my veggies, it came back within days so you gotta stay on top of it.

    Good to know think lack of fruit/veggies may be part of the issue. I'm eating some but not enough. Need to go for a grocery shopping spree and get lots, and cut out the stuff like chocolate. Bet chocolate does not help... like those big 500 gram chocolate bars. So good though... :p


    Oh and my movements are once a day. Sometimes twice, but rarely.

    I'm guessing that you simply need to eat more. The longer stool stays in your body, the harder it gets. You probably noticed that the part that comes out last is much easier on you, right?

    Exercise also moves 'matter' through your body quicker than being sedentary. (Fiber and Water being the other good suggestions)

    Yes, add some exercise to your day. I've exercise most days of the week for about a year and a half and from day 1 noticed it gets things moving and haven't had an issue since.

    Just an update on the situation. It's been much better now, but still somewhat hard. Now it's more like peanut butter, so it can squeeze out without opening up too big. It almost feels like something is blocking though, when I push. But think it might just be a little swollen up there. Thankfully that area seems to heal fairly fast. As long as I keep up the fruits and drink more water think I'll be good I think. That seems to have done the trick. That and the fiber. Beans, fiber bars, etc.
