Stony Brook math

Looks like I'll be entering the mathematics Ph.D. program at Stony Brook this fall. I know they have an excellent reputation among those who know these things, and especially in the fields of algebra/topology, which I forsee myself pursuing.

Anyone know anything about the place in general, or the math graduate program in particular? Is the area a reasonable place to live? I've lived in NJ all my life but have never been to Long Island.

i dont know much about the math program at stony brook, but i spent the first 16 years of my life living about 15 minutes from the campus.

SBU is a rather large campus, in a town of 25-30,000 about 50 miles from New York City. There is a decent mall nearby, and a rather large movie theather for entertainment. PM me if you have any other questions, and i will try to help.

Stony Brook isn't exactly the nicest looking campus (especially for SUNYs) but it's in a good area and plenty of open land. It is decently far from NYC and you'll definitely need a car (you're prob driving from Jersey anyway) to get around. If you like suburbia, that's your place.

I actually go to SBU. Everyone leaves for the weekends and you really need a car, especially from NJ. Will you be living on campus?

I don't know yet where I'll be living, that's one of the things I need to figure out over the next few months once I make my final decision. Anyone know what small apartments go for in the area?
