can a mobo originally meant for SIMM RAM take any other type RAM?
I cant stant 40m simm ram much longer....

No, its physically impossible to fit RAM that is not the correct dimentions into a slot, let alone get the wrong type to work.

its an ancient compaq presario (the type where everything is compressed to 1/1239812391 of its size), not much I can do about a mobo?......or can i? i aint got a friggin clue....

lol i feel your pain :D had me a presario too a long time ago... ;)

aw well ya can save a couple things, hd, video card (if not onboard) and well...sound maybe but ya really wanna be upgrading the whole thing...!

If its 72-pin SIMMS and is a late 486 or Pentium board, then it may be able to benefit from EDO memory (assuming that it wasn't installed with it anyway - usually if the board supported it, EDO was usually fitted). This offers a slight speed advantage as its memory timings are slightly more aggressive than normal DRAM, but still nowhere near as fast as today's SDRAM and DDR DRAM.
I also doubt that it would be worth the money to upgrade compared to how cheap normal SDRAM is at the moment.

As for the board, I doubt you will be able to find an upgrade for that compaq board (certainly not at a reasonable price). Time to upgrade, and just in time for christmas too.
