Sup,

I need to find 10 companies and to do a portfolio project on them for my Economic summer school class. Anyone has any good suggestions? I have a limit of $5000 virtual budget. The teacher will give out 30 points extra credits to whoever ends up with the highest profit. Since this is summer school (ends August 3), I am hoping for some quick fast profit type companies that I should invest into.

So do can you guys help a fellow Anandtecher out? Thanks, as always you guys are THE BEST!

Intel (intc) and 3com (coms) seem to be doing well as of late. Not too sure if they are buys tho.

Here's my short list of companies you may want to consider.

Cisco - CSCO
Lucent - LU
JDS Uniphase - JDSU
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter - MWD
Home Depot - HD
Motorola - MOT
Akamai - AKAM
Boeing - BA
Hughes Aircraft - GMH

These are just a few that I am looking at closely this summer. I'm a bit biased towards MWD b/c I work there, but the earnings are great.

well, I have shares of Cisco (csco) right now and for the past several weeks, they've done poorly. If you are doing this for only the next few weeks, I'm not sure they are a good idea. If you're into networking, Nortel has done quite well (NT) the past month or so. Of course, seeing how crazy the stock market is, I could be completely wrong.

Also, Juniper Networks (jnpr) has done rather well the past few weeks. Maybe worth a look?

I've been involved in a couple of these economic class competitions (i also participated in our local newspaper competition, which lasts for a 3 months). The thing to remember is that these are really short term investments, so don't go for the big name companies unless you know something big will happen (like AOL merger). And especially since your virtual budget is so small, you want to stick with penny stocks.

The newspapers competition that i play in each year is actually quite fun... you start out with $100,000 virtual money, and if you're in the top 3 or so, you get whatever money you've actually made in that time. There's a monkey that picks the weekly stocks too, and in the last few years that i've played, the monkey has done better then the 5 professional stockbrokers that act as advisors. Moral of the story: don't analyze too much, because randonmess often allows a better chance of extreme movements, especially in such short terms as these games.

Ok so far my stocks are not doing so well. The main problem is with Amd and SWTX.

Why is Amd dropping so much these few days? I think this is because their profit report is not as much as Intel. Don't know about SWTX.

This is not a "good" company, but you might get lucky. Value America is about .80 cents a share, you might catch it on a up tick.
