I used to trade with Ameritrade 3-4 years ago but I haven't traded since then... anyways found a company I am planning on investing big bucks so was curious what firm you all use and what you pay for commissions...

Thanks.

I have been using TD Waterhouse for years. Not the absolute lowest in terms of commissions, but $12 isn't too expensive and I like their other features. For example, I get quite a few chances to buy into IPOs through TD Waterhouse.

I don't like TDwaterhouse, but I'm too lazy to switch since they have all my records.

If I had to start over I'd use scottrade or brown co.

I am in the process of switching over everything to Smith Barney, but that is because my soon to be wife and I have sufficient assets that the service we will get will outweigh any fees we pay...

Most of my money used to be with Schwab which had a great interface and plenty of free real time quotes. I used e*trade way back when and never liked it.

I don't make a lot of trades, so features such as reporting, record keeping and financial advice are more important to me that getting $10 trades...

Scottrade is very cheap. Sharebuilder is ok, but you don't actually own the stock with sharebuilder. Not that its really that important b/c your X number of shares out of 10 trillion won't mean that much when voting but I'd still prefer to own the shares.

I've been using E*Trade for a few years, they're not the cheapest but I have enough assets with them to qualify for their Priority service, so only 12.99 commissions instead of the 20 or 23 they wind up being otherwise. Never used any of the others except for Fidelity, and I don't care much for their site.

Scottrade is great, but they don't provide you with dollar cost-average reports. Come tax time, if you traded heavily - either prepare to spend some time with a calculator or pay an accountant to do it for you.

You can, however, keep a track of it yourself - in MS Money or Quicken. They will calculate it automatically for you.
