I'd like to be able to buy and sell online with little lag time. I'm only looking to gamble $500 or so right now, but have never done so before. Any tips or links would be great!

If you're using an online broker like Ameritrade then they should have functions to buy and sell stock. Simply put, you just enter the action (Buy/sell) and the price.

we use tdwaterhouse and scottrade, both gave us a month of free trades when we wired 1k to them when we opened the accounts.

500 bucks isn't much to start with, it will be a grind at the beginning =/

you really wont be able to do much with 500 bucks unless you're just gonna dabble in the penny stocks...

I'm just a college student with a little extra money at the moment. I'm not at the point yet where I can invest hundres or thousands on a monthly basis.
