Stock Intel HSF for core 2 duo

so for your stock core 2 duo HSF (if you use it) what is your

RPMs?
core clock?
Temperature?
Noise levels?
are you using thermal paste, or the pad it came with?

just wanted some info to compare against the system i built for my GF. The one in her system is astoundingly loud and im wondering if i should get some AS5 or a new heatsink when i go to visit this weekend to cure it.

~3800rpm
1.8ghz
35C in bios, 55C in windows vista
VERY loud, can her it in the next room
and im using the pad it came with (maybe i screwed it up a little when i installed the HSF?)

Don't quote me on the exact specs, but...

The old P4 'stock Intel HSF' used to spin to, like, 5300 RPM -- and sounded like a buzzsaw under load!

The new C2D 'stock Intel HSF' are limited to, like, 2500 RPM -- and are very quiet!

This was a conscious decision on Intel's part, 'cause they got tired of ppl complaining that they could hear them in the next room. 😀

It looks like your GF has the older version...

except this is the hsf from a core 2 extreme so it has the blue fan.. which could account for the increased fan speed. but that still doesnt explain the high temps. you'd think with a higher fan speed the cpu would run cooler and then the fan would spin down to a lower rpm and noise level.

if i enable quietfan in the bios for this setup and give a 55C target temp, the cpu spins at 3800 rpm for about 2 seconds, then lowers for 2 seconds (slightly quieter) then raises and so on (REALLY ANNOYING).

edit: so possibly just a botched HSF installation on my part and I screwed up the thermal pad? or are the core 2 extreme HSF's notoriously loud?

Got me?!?!?

Unless you're a purist, or whatever, I'd throw that thing out and replace it with an aftermarket cooler.

I used to run a Scythe Mine 3, and that thing was dead nuts quiet. The first time I used it, I thought the fan wasn't spinning!

If you're GF sprung for an EE, I'm sure another 50 bones for a quiet cooler wouldn't bother her, yes? 😀

actually this was all a birthday present for her (mobo, proc, HSF, ram), i actually bought the retail heatsink for the extreme edition for real cheap, the processor is an e4300.

if i knew the EE HSF was loud and its not just a botched installation i'd go ahead an buy a different HSF. but money is an issue since im dead broke now. so if i find out its just botched i'll do thermal paste and fix the issue...

i'd do this by trial and error but shes like 3 hours from me in college so i kind of need to know if/what i need to order before i head down there this weekend

yeah sorry, im asking for stats about the retail HSF in this post so i thought the subject matter, while similar, was different enough to merrit a new post. also, i posted in a different (more appropriate) section.

and also i really cant try thermal compound and then if that doenst work try something else, because then i would have to make a 2nd trip whenever a new HSF shipped and arrived.
