Stock holders - how much did you lose so far this year?

So far I'm down 14%, and that's considering 2 of my stocks have risen since the beginning of the year. My worst pick so far has been ORCL, lost lots of money on it.

The funny thing - my 401k is at the same level as the beginning of the year. But that's because of the monthly contributions :(

Buy now while everything is cheap, companies like Oracle and Boeing will be nice stocks to own in 5 years. Just think of your 401k as giving you more bang for your buck right now, it's very long term anyways.

I was actually talking more about standard stocks, rather that 401k or other mutual funds. But glad to hear you guys are doing ok.

I got discounted company stock at my last company and I'm still up over 50%. :D

I prefer to spread the risk and buy S & P 500 fund shares instead of individual stocks, so at the moment those shares are down slightly from the start of the year.

Like LeadMagnet says this is a good time to buy during the dip. Vanguard's VFINX is a better choice for most people than gambling on individual stocks.

oh man, I just checked my 401K. Since Jan 1 this year, the return (not including monthly contributions) is -2%. Most of loss occurred in July. I lost $1000 in July alone.

Don't own any of those, but felt like replying to this thread anyways. It actually reminded me that I hadn't checked my rate of return in awhile.

Actually my 401K is quite diverse. 35% in large cap, 30% in small cap, 15% in bonds/CDs, 12% international, 8% in emerging markets. The stock mutual funds have been losing money this year.

I'm not willing to invest in individual stocks until I can spread money across 10 of them. It's too much like gambling to buy a small handful of stocks. So until then, I'm sticking to mutual funds.
