Does it depend on the company or is it an end of year thing? Also, if you own a stock for 11 months after the last paid dividend and then sell it, does the new owner get the full amount or just 1/12th?
Dividends are announced by the company with a "Record Date" which is usually a few days before the money actually goes out. Whoever owns it on this specific day receives the full amount. I think quarterly is most common, but it can be whenever the company feels like it.
