stock cooling on 9800

Have a Sapphire 9800 PRO, now I know this card runs pretty hot, I felt it soon after a shutdown and yea, it does heat up quite abit. At this moment, i have 3 fans, not super big ones, but the usual small-med ones. I was thinking of opening up my casing and using my mega room fan to blow at it, would it help?

I do no OCing as I dont want to decrease the lifespan of my components, or damage them.

Right now the temp of my mobo is 41C and my CPU is 44C. My radeon has no temp sensor so i cant detect the temp, but I know its over 60c.

Now what Im wondering, is the fan on the 9800 pro enough to cool it down? Since i have no OCing, will it be enough to cool my it down, or would i have to get another fan or two to chill it down even more?

Thanks.

The stock cooling on a 9800Pro is marginal at best, I'd suggest replacing it w/ a cheap VGA silencer, it makes no noise and cools much much better, plus it's very inexpensive.

The 9800 does get hot, but since you're not planning on OC'ing, then you should be OK. If you're sensitive to the temperatures, then a VGA Silencer would be the cheapest option.

Marginal? What is the maximum margin it will run to on stock cooling with no OC. (i.e) how should i know when to shut it off before it overheats. Also, i will be getting cooling stuff as soon as I have the money to do so.

But in the meantime do advise me on my temperature. How will I know when to turn it off?

replace it with the VGA silencer, better cooling and very good with overclocking the 9800 Pro.

You should be okay unless you start seeing artifacts or if your games lockup after playing for a while.

And, the Silencer is on sale at SVC; as per the e-mails they sent out, use code "rev3" at checkout for a price of $9.99.

If you are concerned about your 3- year warranty, don't bother. :p

especially if you don't o/c.

ATI guarantees their cooling for 3 years, it IS sufficient. ;)
Your card will "artifact" if it is overheating. ;)

The only advantage of the arctic-cooling Silencer is to exhaust hot air OUT of your case (it takes up the next PCI slot, also) . . . only the XT's (and 256/256MB pros) come with a temperature diode.

i actually have a room fan as big as my case sitting right next to the comp blowing in through the side panel i took off. everything in my comp is real cool except the 9800 pro and crappy asus northbridge heatsink. my processor is in the mid 30's overclocked and hard drives high 20's. the back of the card right above where the chip is gets very hot as well as the heatsink. the memory is pretty warm too. i don't think the giant airflow increase helps much cause the heatsink has so little surface area.

atitool for overclocking. i have a question though. every time i use ati tool and change speeds up or down, even only a few mhz either way, i get bad artifacting in 2d stuff like windows desktop and internet explorer, but it's fine at normal speeds. i used to have it overclocked without any noticable artifacts. any clue why, especially since underclocking does the same?
