I forgot to say this earlier, use baking soda to get rid of the smell. Pour some in it, then wait 5 mins and rinse it down.

But put the drain plug in and fill the sink up with bleach water first. That way, when you pull the plug, the bleach water will fill the whole disposal instead of just pouring into the bottom and leaving all the nasty bacteria on the top and sides.
I use a sink full of bleach water to clean cutting boards after using them for raw meat, so my disposal gets disinfected at least a couple times a week.
 
Try removing / cleaning the black rubber flaps. Then pour 1/2 a box of salt (yes, salt) down the disposal. Run about 1/2 cup of hot water down it & let it sit 5 minutes.
Turn it on and flush with cold water for 2-3 minutes.
