Stinky garbage disposal

Leros

Lifer
My garbage disposal starting giving off a rather nasty odor. I ran hot water with the dispoal turned on for 30 minutes to try and wash it out. Didnt work. I took the disposal off the sink, and went oustide and presure washed it the best i could. Didnt work. Only the side of the sink with the disposal smells, so Im sure its not the drain line. How do I get rid of this smell?

either do as bonkers said, or try running dish detergent and hot water throught the disposal as the blades are running.

Make sure theres no fatty meat stuck in the blades. Once, my disposal stunk like hell and I couldn't figure it out.. I ran lemony dish soap through it.. and nothing got better. Then, finally stuck my hand in there and pulled out a NASTY piece of fat/meat, probably chicken or pork. it was soft enough that it didn't make the disposal sound weird and too big and tough to go through the disposal.

Good luck. That problem stinks.

They say you are supposed to run a large glassful of ice in the disposal to get rid of that problem. Seems more pleasant than reaching in. Plus ice supposedly helps to keeps the blades sharp.

That would have been more fun that feeling that piece of soggy flesh. But I really didn't care, I was just glad to have figured it out.

You can also cut a lemon in half & throw it in...

I just unloaded two trays of icecubes into it. It smells good so far, but the smell could just need a few minutes to reach the surface.

Seriously, unless there is a hunk of meat stuck in there bleach will kill any nasty smelling bacteria in there.

Pack the thing full of ice and let it rip, repeat a couple of times. Run some bleach through it afterwards to kill any bacteria.

The lemon stuff is jut going to cover up the smell. You want to get rid of the source.

They sell cleaners specifically for cleaning garbage disposers. They probably sell them everywhere, but I know my local Home Depot sells three different brands of them.

They work very good.

I really hate sticking my hand into the disposal, but I find that using a small flashlight and pulling back the rubber flaps I can look down into the disposal and see stuff. Thats how i found a bottle cap that got lodged in there once.
Its funny how I never had these types of problems before I got married.... its even worse now with kids.
