Not gonna happen anytime soon it looks like. They are working on their super big franchises first to boost sales of their WiiU. If we would get one this generation I expect it coming near the end of the WiiU life.

I just hope they have the sense to make a new 2D one, I'm pretty sure it would sell really well. While I like the prime games it kind of irks me that they still do 2D mario games all the time but have pretty much ditched it for metroid.

I think this is why Nintendo hasn't been doing so well right now. They released the Wii U 2 years ago now, and we still have yet to see the staple franchises. We finally got a Mario Kart, and Donkey Kong, but they were a year late. They needed a couple of these ready at launch. I really wish there was a Castlevania, Contra, etc., as well in the works. I mean, a Wii style Contra 2D partial 3D style shooter could be awesome, with some levels cutting to the first person view using the Wiimote to aim... I mean, this would work, too bad it will never happen.

6.5 years since a home console Fire Emblem, at least Metroid: Other M was out in 2010.

I still have mine laying around somewhere..lol. I've been tempted to pick up metroid fusion since I've never played it, but I'm not sure how well it was ported to the Wii U version.

Castlevania has gotten all weird and crazy. Its too much like Devil May Cry and not enough like Metroid. And its not a Nintendo exclusive franchise anyway.

We really should have had an original Mario, Zelda, and Metroid title right on launch day.

The Super Mario Bros. U is just a weird mishmash of SMB 3 and SMW. And its not great.
The Zelda title was just an HD remake of the Wii game.
I never cared much for Donkey Kong and the one I saw on U didnt look that great anyway.
I keep hoping they license another Dragon Quest title, but that looks unlikely. Ditto Final Fantasy.
Overall I am not impressed.

DAMMIT NINTENDO WHY DO YOU TORMENT ME!????!

nintendo has been doing this crap since the gamecube - why would you think it is all of a sudden going to change?

they are just a stupid company when it comes to consoles. there is so much money to be made if they just did it right. those of us who grew up playing the awesome games you are talking about, now are in our 30s and 40s and have a lot of disposable income and we are sitting here waiting for them to make these amazing games that we would eat up. but instead they are making stupid shit like animal farm and whatever the other crap that isn't the classics we want made for this gen.

I bought Metroid Fusion yesterday on my wii u and it's awesome. The virtual console allows you to turn on pixel smoothing and put it in the original aspect ratio. It's definitely worth $8, especially if you never played it on the GBA.

I have at least 2 cartridges for this game :p

Just played for a couple hours 2 days ago. Completed a save file that was halfway through the game. Killed the Mother Brain and blew up the planet again...

What are you saying Nintendo did on Gamecube? Nintendo made great Gamecube games for all their biggest franchises...including Metroid.

What are you saying they did wrong with the Gamecube? They were more powerful than their biggest competitor, they beat Sony to the punch with an online adapter and "embraced" online at least as much as Sony ever did back then, they self-published as many mature titles as they could, etc. They continued making great games and courting other devs to do the same even if it meant throwing money at them (for example, Capcom exclusives and Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater).

Though people misattribute their failure all the time, they actually lost for a simple reason that had nothing to do with effort: the market wasn't big enough. It's the same reason the Dreamcast died (no, not piracy ). The DC died because too many devs and gamers waited for the PS2 and too few had a reason to get a DC after they had their PS2. Nintendo didn't do anything wrong to get to that point, they just failed to differentiate themselves from Sony and, when their slice of the target demographic wasn't big enough to justify porting the latest megahit, they got their butts handed to them again and again. That's why it's so crazy to suggest that they should change course and act more like Sony or MS to find success. They already tried that and history has proven that to be a failing strategy every time.

They didn't make the same mistake with the Wii and differentiated themselves plenty but the same people who THOUGHT they understood what went wrong with the 'cube THOUGHT Nintendo was continuing down that same path and THOUGHT that Nintendo was failing again (couldn't be further from the truth). It's cute to hear people so naive. Their ideas for Nintendo's failure sound more like a list of reasons why they like Sony/MS better ("ONLINE!" "NO WAGGLE!" "DUALSHOCK!" "ADULT GAMES!" "BETTER GRAPHICS!"). Invariably they completely fail to consider what would happen if Nintendo just became another Sony/MS to attract them away from Sony/MS. "Would you buy a Wii if the standard controller were a DualShock clone, it had an online service comparable to Sony, and better performance than the competition? You would? Really? Then why didn't you buy the GameCube instead of the PlayStation 2 the last time Nintendo tried what you suggest?"

These people make laughably wrong claims about Nintendo's failure to embrace online or how they have always had inferior performance. I sent my first email from a Super Nintendo that was more advanced than the biggest competitor (Sega Genesis/MegaDrive). They always had superior hardware until the Wii/PS3/360 generation and yet people think that this is the way it's always been.

CRzoe is mostly right...however they really did screw up with the Wii-U. It does you absolutely no good to be first to the punch with a new system if you don't have the catalog to back it up. The same thing happened with the 3DS, but it at least had the DS catalog to help it hold out until games started coming out.

I never bought a gamecube because it simply didn't have the games either (by comparison of everyone else). Sure it had Nintendos games but they were too far and few between to make a justification unless you were a die hard fan. They fell into the same trap this time around but it is hitting them even harder since devs have gotten lazy and want easy same ol same ol ports for every platform.

Their actions with the Wii U really are indefensible, but it's not like their competition ever has a stellar launch library either. I think the Wii U's standard controller should have continued to be the Motion Plus Wii Remote and the tablet, if necessary, should've been some kind of smaller DS hybrid that also worked as a 2DS with NFC and such (give people a reason to carry it around; promote a secondary library; and have a less gimmicky primary function).

The one for Wii wasn't that great. I liked Metroid Prime. Save the 2D stuff for mobile.

I didn't play The Other M, but I expected it to be garbage from looking at the same previews that everyone else was getting excited over.

I haven't played the newer Ninja Gaiden games, but I've always thought Tomonobu Itagaki is a hack since DoA and the volleyball spinoffs. I was puzzled about the excitement for "The Other M" while I felt nothing but dread.

I briefly tried the *other* Wii Metroid game: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It starts out trying to be too much like Halo. Turned me off pretty quick. Still, I bought Metroid Prime Trilogy and I'm tormented about whether the original Gamecube versions of MP1 and MP2 are better. Some of the neat special effects of the Gamecube versions are missing in the Wii version, but the Wii versions support wide-screen.
