At last! Something I thought i'd never experience, a functional, fun and powerful PC to game with at 1080p.

My last buy was my Gigabyte HD 7950 3gb. I'm still running it stock and it's serving me so well. Everything runs smooth enough for me.

It's also the longest i've been without upgrading or feeling the need to and it feels just right.

Long live old PCs!

Kudos!!! Mine lasted 5 years with a Q9650@3.6Ghz sporting a GTX 285 SSC. I just gave it to my son as his i7-920 water buffalo just passed, also 5+ years old!

That is not a old computer.. Hell a year ago it was elite. Should be a nice machine for a good while though. I would at least use CCC to bump the max power and increase clocks 10-15%

Yeah well I thought about it. I used Afterburner for a while but I had some particular issues with stability (like many had when I read posts on Guru3D) when OCing the card with it.

I'll probably up the clocks a bit with CCC when it'll be needed.

Yeah i'm really happy to at last have a good PC that'll last for 3-4 years with minor upgrading.

My 7950 still runs everything at 1080P fine. My only issue is lack of CPU power for BF4.

All 7950s ever made are not "old" as they haven't been around for more than a couple of years, tops...

Whoa there! Please don't go around calling 7950s old. We're not even into the next process node and I don't need anything aggravating my upgradeitis just now.

It has nothing to do with mining, though 7950s are good for that too. An overclocked 7950 can be FASTER than a stock 7970 depending on how highly it's oc'd, and isn't that much slower than a stock 280X. Few games can really stress it at 1080p. A 7950 was my Skyrim gaming card and it worked great. A 7950 is 28nm (current node) and is still a "current generation" video card imho. I mean a 280X is just a rebadged 7970 anyway and a 7950 is an underclocked, cut down 7970.

That said I'm glad OP is happy. But it's not an old card. :)

Yeah, see what the current value of that 7950 is on craigslist or ebay, and perhaps you'd want to quickly sell it to a miner at a huge profit, then purchase a nice used Nvidia card with equivalent gaming performance, and pocket the cash profit.

Has nothing to do with mining, an overclocked 7950 is within 5-7% as fast as a stock 7970 at games, it's 28nm (current node), and is still plenty powerful (few games can really stress it). A 7950 was my Skyrim gaming card and it worked great.

Current node, sadly that is still true :(

My 6950-flashed-to-6970 with an aftermarket cooler is still very good, but as I recently got a 1440p monitor it's now obviously a bit too slow for high-end gaming. I can still run at 1080p and the monitor looks good enough for me, so that part is okay, but instead I'm mining with middlecoin and it's actually pretty quiet considering it's running flat out at 925 Mhz! (around 480-490 kH/s).

I'd like a new aftermarket 290x or 780ti but they're crazy expensive right now. And maybe Maxwell is just around the corner so I can wait.

Yea it is great, I can sell my 7950s at any time and get more than I paid for them. No reason to sell them though as R9 290s with custom coolers are ridiculously expensive and I am making good cash litecoin mining with them. If the litecoin thing becomes unprofitable I still have good gaming cards! I just can't lose with these things.

Looking at the specs...it doesn't look like it's worth upgrading to a R9 280X...
FPS seem a bit higher but for $400 minus the mere $150-175 my 7950 could give back...

Would you consider it?

Unless prices have dropped recently, you should get a lot more than $175 for your 7950. I sold mine on ebay for $315 a few weeks go.

Prices actually keep going up... again...

A 280x is just a renamed 7970. So, although the 280x would be a step up, it certainly would not be worth the $$$ for such a small performance difference (about 20%).

I'm gonna check how I can get...maybe, just maybe I will have enough so I can't say no :p

Would a R9 280X would be a worthy upgrade?

This may not be a popular recommendation, but based on the current price of the 280x, a a GTX 770 would be a nice bump for a bit.

AT GPU Bench 2014 7950 Boost vs. GTX 770

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1033?vs=1037

I am seriously considering this as Mantle on the 7950 is not worth using yet.

And I want more FPS dang it!

Going from a 7950 to a 280X (same as 7970 GHz edition) is barely an upgrade, keep the 7950 unless you're looking at a 780 or 290 or so. The 770 is more or less identical to the 280X's performance, maybe ~5fps difference depending on what game, I think Batman Arkham City series prefers Nvidia over AMD (as if it purposely gimps AMD), etc.

True, but I am considering an update to Win 8.1 and the GTX 770 for BF4, which gives some very good gains vs my current setup.

I really wanted to go R9 290, but I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon, lol.

The GB cards were stock clocked at 1GHz, I'm not sure what AT boost card is at, some are only 900 MHz, makes reviews that don't list clock speed kinda annoying.
