yeah game pad with analog is the only way. It takes alot more unnecessary practice with mouse/keyboard.

Me too, I've never been able to land a plane. Crash and burn every time.

I find BF Vietnam is alot easier to fly, I use a stick and took lots of pratice but I'm not bad, but I still can't fly choppers good.

I think I might try my gamepad next though.

Oh man, I was a champ with planes. You need a joystick to be fully effective though...it's not like they cost very much. I perfected taking out the guys on flak guns by flying lower than they could shoot their gun, or they couldn't see me. Then I'd pop up and bomb em haha fun times. I want a WWII mod for BF2 though because missles are no fun.

Having an analog joystick with twist is a big help.

Practice... Alone.

Start a local server with El Al and practice bombing stationary objects. Use the different views to gauge how you did (use your normal view for dropping the bombs, switch to front camera looking back for seeing where the bombs land).

I probably suck with planes now since it's been over a year since I played BF1942, but those were the things I did when I first learned how to fly. I was nowhere near GREAT with planes, you know one of those guys you see in a game with 20 kills and no deaths and PERFECT bomb placements. But I was definitely better than the average pubbie.

It takes time to practice though. It took me probably 4-6 hours in total solo practice before I started getting comfortable dropping bombs on stationary targets. Then you move into public games where you have moving targets and you have to learn more...

very easy, just have to know what your target is going after first

if its another plane, make sure the pilot is busy trying to bomb somethin, when you are at his tail he is either toast or you two are stuck in a long long dogfight which works well also (stops him killing your teammates)

if its a tank, then circle it and bomb away, takes some practice to learn how to bomb well

if its a soldier, just shoot him, bomb him, mow him, easy targets unless he gets in a good cover then ignore him and find another target

if its a AA gun, best option is to fly as high as you can and then swoop down on him, easy to target your bomb and he wont notice you untill its too late (busy watching the horizon), second best option is to fly below him, he cant shoot past 0° angle and most of the time its maybe 10° because of sand bags and other objects.

Playing against planes

As a soldier, run for cover first, second locate the nearest stationary machine gun, they are almost or even sometimes better at taking down airplanes

As a tank, take a sharp turn when you hear the airplane, screws up their bombing aim, press 2 to take control over the machine gun and shoot it like mad, they will either run away or just die

As aa gun, always target waaay ahead of the plane, watch the black smoke, thats where you are doing damage.

After crashing about 20 planes, I learned a 2 things.

1: Press F10 to get third person perspective.

2: used WSAD and the Arrow Keys to control the plane, don't use the mouse.

After learning this, it was focusing on bombing and 180 turn techniques.

Yeah, I never bothered with them. I got pretty good at them using the mouse for controls, but I found that I just got way more kills in a tank or by being on foot taking an enemy position. Some guys who only do planes can really rack up some impressive stats, but I never bothered getting that good...too impatient I guess.....plus I got a large chunk of my points from taking checkpoints which is harder to do in a plane.

But my favorite was the battleship. I'd grab that thing on any water map and stay in it the whole time sinking their carrier over and over and shelling their land bases between. I never got top player with it, but there is NOTHING in an online FPS as satisfying as sinking a large ship and watching a half dozen players swimming towards lifeboats that you've already got in your crosshair. The only thing close is running over somebody with a jeep when they have their back turned cause you can practically hear them be all....w-t-f?

I am a master pilot of all thing aerial in any of the Battlefield games using a mouse and keyboard. My secret is subtile moves make big turns, be relaxed and tesnion in your body will only make you crash. Also using your rudder A+D keys is one of the best ways of turning. For more extreme turns keep the plane on its side and pont the rear rudder so that it points opposite of the way you are turning.

Example: Making a right turn with the plane on it's side so that you are pulling up to make your loop you would want to hit the A key that makes the plane turn left. While making a right loop.

Yes, a joystick. It's akward and frustrating without. With, it's probably the easiest plane to fly ever.

In your joystick setup, be sure to bind the following buttons:
Bail out
Parachute (don't try jumping back over to the keyboard for this...not enough time)
Rear View
Forward view

with the rear view bound to a convenient button you'll perfect your bombing in no time since you can see where you hit. Hit forward view twice to get back to fullscreen forward view without the cockpit blocking your view.
