Apple Store says "Video recording, HD (720p) up to 30 frames per second with audio; still photos (960 x 720) with back camera"

Wow what a disappointment, I would figured they would have had the iphone 4's camera

Why would they do that? They want to make certain that the iPhone is their premier device. They gave the new iPod Touch "just enough" to lure people in IMO.

Just enough?

IMO, the new iPod Touch is a much more attractive package.

It's a lot smaller, has the same display, dual cameras for Face Time, A4 CPU, and is about $1800 cheaper than an iPhone 4 with a 2-year contract.

It seems kind of strange considering the hardware is so similar to the iPhone 4. I can't imagine adding a bit better still cam would increase the costs THAT much.

Its not a matter of product costs, its a matter of differentiating the product lines.

This is a shame. Even 2 or 3 Megapixels is enough to differentiate it with the iPhones but they had to go all the way down 960x720 (what's that, like 0.8?).

I figured it would be no time before a stupid "i hate apple" thread went up about the new iPhone Touch. They cut costs and didnt put a camera on it, the old nano didnt have a camera. Be happy that is has 720p video or go get a f-ing Zune

Well it does video at the same rez as the iphone. Just wondering if it will be as good as the iphone (which IMO is as good or better than any sub $300 fixed lens camcorder).

For kids, tweens and teens that email, twit, text, facebook ect... photos, the tiny rez will be enough since most will be viewed on a phone, ipod or other small portable device.

I'll probably get a couple for my kids this Xmas.

Guess what, people want different things. I'd give up the retina display and the video camera to get a decent still camera on my Touch.

I just called apple and they told me it was 4.1 megapixel camara.

what do you think?

Well, according to their website, it is 960*720 still images. Maybe wait until it gets into people's hands and see what's what.

This is pathetic.

It boggles my mind why they'd limit the camera to that. But I guess they figure if it's good enough for the DSi. The iPhone is still a better value even with it's pricey contracts, purely because of it's phone and data capabilities.

Yes but the DSi has a distinct advantage concerning games.... buttons.

i dont know why the fuck everyone is complaining about it having a shitty camera. the ipod touch 32gb is about half the price of a new iphone. you cant expect the same specs minus the phone capability when considering the pricing. if you want a better camera use your cell phone camera like everyone else. the rear cam is just a convenience for the facetime feature, that is all. they didnt even advertise this as having a still shot camera. im actually VERY surprised they didnt gut more out of it.

1)Not everyone can get an Iphone. Everyone can get a new Ipod Touch.

2)Its not a better value when you're paying a good $30 extra phone premium a month to a carrier(ATT) when other like Sprint and T-Mobile are much cheaper by the month.

If anything, the main highlight is HD video recording and Facetime. It was all about Facetime. Maybe last time it was about video recording or still photos when they contemplated putting a camera in the IPTv3, but it was pretty obvious with all the rumors and peeks at iOS 4.1, it was going to be Facetime for the iPod Touch also.

If you can produce good 960x720 images (and Apple honestly hasn't been disappointing in the imaging field), then I will be satisfied. My worry is that using a video camera for still photos usually turns into fail.

But do you guys realize this makes the iPod Touch one step closer to the iPhone? I can now just tether with my real phone and make 3G Facetime calls via Wifi. LOL. In fact I find that to be better than what iPhone users get to do... well they can JB and then make calls over 3G... but still. I can do it natively with an IPT.

It doesn't have a 'still camera' at all, it just takes a still shot using the video. The stills are same resolution as the video. If they had only put the camera on it and left out the video - there would be a thread about how dumb it was to not include HD video. People like to look for things to complain about, gets really annoying. The pictures that it takes will look great on the screen of the device, just not so good on a 22" monitor. The video will be great, it'll be like having a point and shoot on hand. Also, with facetime this opens up the ability to make video calls, since not everyone will have the iPhone.

See, you can look at the good and enjoy the device, after all we are tech enthusiasts, but nobody on a PC forum will ever do that...'Apple XYZ Win' threads are non-existent. I get heated when all i see in the title is 'fail'

Maybe a 5mp camera wouldn't fit? Not sure.

Remember that the previous gen Nano could only take video and couldn't take pictures. I heard somewhere that a video cam is smaller than a photo cam. Not sure if thats true or why that is.
