now that i have my domain... how do i link it to my server, my IP address... I am just setting it to forward to it... but when i do that, whatever page i am on on my site, it just says www.domain.com... never www.domain.com/currentpage.html

IT WONT SAY "/" THE PAGE YOU ARE ON!! it is stuck on the initial domain name
How can i fix this?

also (im using namecheap) what the hell are Name Servers? it says you can set up name servers to an IP... help, please

Just set Nameserver #1 to be your home IP address... as long as you are running a webserver from that IP address.

where are you hosting your files? the host will tell you what you should put in as the DNS servers for the domain.

I am running the server myself...

to see the problem i mean, heres my site: www.igeyobiar.com

oh and it says that i should have 2 nameservers if i am going to use my own instread of the NameCheap ones... do i need to use a name server if im hosting it myself?

(the intro thing is kinda crappy... its just a test)

ahh.. are you just doing a domain forwarding then? it looks like it's working just fine.

about the address, you might be able to uncheck the box that says 'stealth' or something like that so it will show the /page.html or whatever page it is you're on.

sax guy... it says once you have a name server add that to the DNS... instead of an IP... so you link the IP to the nameserver i think and link the nameserver to the DNS... but do i need a nameserver?

When you buy a domain (i have never done this!!), are you supposed to just do URL forwarding to the server?

maybe you shouldnt be hosting your website on your own server.. Sounds like you have some learnin to do first.

if you are hosting in a real host then yes. you put the DNS ip address in the registrar so it knows where to look, and then the DNS server (which will be taken care of completely by your webhost) will point to the website itself.

it's completely up to you. if you want to host it yourself you can do either forwarding like what you do right now, or host your dns in a free place like http://www.zoneedit.com and point that domain to your ip address (you're going to have to read a little bit to understand the process, but it's not that difficult).

if you want to host it somewhere else, then ask RossMAN, he knows where to point you :)

see i think i can do that on Name Cheap... But i just have one more question... why do you need to have 2 nameservers? if the name server is just pointing to your IP why another?

hosts usually use two (sometimes up to three or four) DNS servers. you only need one, the others are for backup.

Sorry, its me again, but this is pissing me off!

So i go to name cheap and set up ns1.igeyobiar.com to my IP adress...

Then i added that Name Server to the DNS... so now it goes to the site, but it still does the screwed URL thing where it always says www.igeyobiar.com

It isnt forwarded, but it still does this!?!?

You should at least have some basic ideas of how hosting works before doing your own host.

I think he does. He just wants to resolve his urls... without hosting it some place other than his computer.

i have a domain from godaddy which I forward to my ip. I had the same issue. godaddy told me that I cant resolve it without hosting it on their servers. I didnt care much, so i just left my ip masked.
i've kinda revived interest in this...so im looking around also to see if there is a solution to it, will let u know if i find anything.
