Burning movies in Nero takes like 4 hours, most of the time going to encoding to DVD format.

What the heck can I use to do this nice and fast, and please don't say WinAVI because the program is a piece of crap, and tells me I don't have the right codecs even though I've installed K-lite full codec pack.

Processor, processor, processor. Encoding is all CPU unless you have a MPEG hardware accelerator that the software will recognize.

Even with dual Xeon 3.06s, a VBR 6500-8500 encode on a full disc takes me more than an hour (I have not done a full disc and watched it lately... I am thinking it takes about 2 hours). Just did an encode with a 3200+ in a laptop for 11 minutes of video, CBR. That took 30-40 minutes.

So, it is just slow.

D00d, encoding video is a long process.
Hours long.
There is no such thing as nice & fast. If it's fast, the quality will be sh!t.
If it's nice, it's gonna take several hours at least.

TMPGEnc. is supposed to be very good.

I use dvdSanta myself; it's similar to WinAVI, but seems to be better.

For backing up DVDs, i use DVD Decrypter to rip, & then DVD Rebuilder + CCE to re-encode from ~ 7.5 GBs to 4.38 GBs...that takes about 4 hrs., even on my system.
Granted, CCE is arguably the best encoder in the world, & i have mine set to do 5 passes, so it's supposed to take a long time, but still.

4 hours? I use slysoft's CloneDVD and to rip + compress a dual-layer to 4.7 gb takes less than an hour. I can hardly tell the difference between the DVD and my compressed iso. Does 4 hours really provide that much better quality?

DVDshrink for DVD backups - takes 30 minutes for the entire process.

To the original poster: What is your original format before coverting to DVD?

Yes.

I used to use DVD Shrink, & i find anything lower than 75% compression tends to result in pixelation & overall poorer quality.

Now, i do have a projector on which i watch my movies/video, so any imperfection is magnified across a 90" display area, so that could be partly why you might not notice it & i do :)

I don't have to do 5 passes with CCE, but the more passes, theoretically, the better.

5 passes is usually the minimum those who use CCE recommend, so it takes alot longer.

The thing i love is how i just i just backed an up Evanescense music video DVD at 42%
And the playback is just as flawless as on the original :Q
Don't tell me that could have been done with CloneDVD ;)
