Still leery about my temps

According to SpeedFan, my computer idles at 38c-40c, and peaks at no higher than 49c on load. Here are specs:

Lian-Li PC-1200b plus
Zalman CNPS9500
AMD Athlon 4200+ x2
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
eVga 7900 GT
2 gig Mushkin ddr400

The ram sits right in front of the intake to me cpu fan. So, it seems that hot air is being sucked and pushed through the heatsink.

I have updated the BIOS, and that dropped my temps a couple of degrees to the ones stated above.

I read so many reviews of this heatsink, and they all said that the Zalman was amazing. Most places also reported much lower temps than I am getting.

My friend has the same processor as I do, with a Thermaltake big Typhoon, and he idles at 29c. I am beginning to wonder if this isnt a bios issue. My heatsink isnt even warm to the touch-not even at the base.

I am also kind of disappointed with the Lian-Li case. There is no intake for the main components, and the power supply sits in its own little "cubby". My fault on that one.

My friend and I have spent hours trying ti figure this out with no solution whatsoever.

Anywho, what could be the problem?(if there is one)

If haven't already you should enable Cool n' Quiet, it will definitely lower your idle temps. Boards also interpret temps differently so that could be part of it. The fact that the Zalman is built for low noise as well as performance as apposed to all out low temps may be a factor.

Having said that your temps are great in my opinion, and your friends seem to low to be correct unless he's living in a meat locker; 30c is 86f.

As far as the Lian Li goes I'm not sure what you mean by "intake for the main components" but the PSU is isolated for a reason; to keep it from pulling hot air from the CPU, GPU, ect.

Hm, I keep hearing that cool and quiet should always be turned off due to it not throttling the processor back up under load.

Its idling at 35c right now, which I dont think is too bad. My friend likes to bs about his computer a lot, so I wouldnt be suprised if he is about this.

The thing about the power supply is that it may not be pulling hot air from the processor, but its not pulling air from anywhere. there arent any vent holes underneath it.

Does anyone know AMD's specified operating temps?

Not running Cool n' Quiet is just stupid in my opinion, your system runs cooler, makes less noise, and wastes less energy. As long as your board supports (all current ones do) you are able to properly set it up there is no reason to not use it.

Well the whole idea behind the V1xxx series is to keep the PSU away from the heat of the CPU, GPU and other hot running components.

I think the A64's are spec'd around 90-100c.
