Still keeping Diablo II chars

This poor Diablo II design deletes your online chars after about 90 days unplayed.

So I put a lot of time into some chars, and haven't played in over 5 years but try to remember to log in every couple months to load each one so it's not deleted.

I think there was a way to convert them from online to local, I should check on that. I only made them online thinking 'in case I want to play with others'.

Then I tried that, and boy oh boy, not a good experience.

This is just one time I forgot to log in and save them...

and my evidence that rerolling a character and having to start over is no big deal; not a problem, don't fix it

Let me show you a trick:

I haven't played D2 in a while. I open it. Oh no, my one good(ish) character is expired:

I click on him, and whaddya know, I can play him again.

I'm fairly certain the characters aren't deleted until someone takes their name.

So yeah, just try clicking 'em.

If that works...

But, Path of Exile's next league starts in two days, and in my mind, PoE is Diablo 3. Have like 700 hours in Path of Exile, and still looking forward to more.

And, now I'm thinking I need to reinstall D2... damn.

Interesting you found that also.

A couple times, that worked, but I've done it for years on expired chars and they're gone.

It doesn't hold up well, IMO, sadly. But I've been wanting to try Path of Exile.

PoE has a standard league which everything folds into, and leagues that run for a few months. The next few month league starts on the 13th, and is nice because it is a fresh economy.

I highly recommend it. PoE is what I thought D3 should have been; so many improvements to the genre, and an interesting take on skills and currency - you can use ANY skill as any class because your skills are gems that you socket into equipment, and there is no gold, only currency items that you can trade or use to try and upgrade current equipment.

I wanted to remake my Griswold smiter for Uber Tristam since I no longer have or remember my account. But I don't feel like spending the time to collect/trade for the set again.

My local players are still there. I got one of every class above level 60, I think.

They need an HD re-release or something.
Or a patch.
Is there an HD patch? I wont be playing on Blizzard.
