saw this yesterday in one of those free computer magazines I got off hot deals -

linky

basically it's a weight to hold down the mouse wire to keep it from being pulled towards the computer it's connected to. you unscrew it, plop the wire in the shaft, give yourself a few extra inches of slack, and screw the top back on. also works with other wires like usb and firewire.

they come in black, chrome, and silver - pics

intro price of $11.95, shipping is $3.85 for the first one and $1.90 for each additional one.

mmm, my card reader could use one of these...it's not heavy enough to stay in place on my desk.

and from the inquirer:

Last up, we have one of those little desktop doohickeys that you would never think about if someone didn't point it out. It is called the WireWeight (here), and it is made by gamers for gamers, and other people if they insist. It is one of those deceptively simple concepts that can make your life easier. WireWeights are a couple of metal chunks that screw together on your mouse cord and weigh it down. If you are constantly having to pull your mouse cable back onto your desk after it falls off the side, this is your widget. It sure sounds like a good idea.

looks pretty good...it's been so tempting to switch to an mx510, but I like the wireless feature of my mx700 so much...maybe this would solve the problem...hmm...

LOL...I've got a 'wire weight'...its called speaker, stack-o-cdrs, coffee mug, etc. Why would someone pay $$ for something like this?

Nothing that some tape couldnt handle, but that would just look dodgey
It would be handy to prevent me from running over my xtra long headphone cord all the time.
How much do these weigh in at?

When I have problems like that I take a twist-tie and cinch the cord up to something to keep the cord from pulling out the slack I need. Cost = zero, effectiveness = 10. I prefer my corded Intellimouse to my cordless. I'll only be using the cordless when away from my desk (i.e. when using my HTPC).

8 ounces...like half a pound. solid brass :)

yeah I have a long headphone cord (sennheiser hd 570 headphones) that I run over all the time too, but the cord is supposed to be Kevlar-reinforced or something, and at any rate it hasn't failed me yet.
