Still having problems with my Diamond MX300 under Win2000

The problem: MP3s will only play for about 30 seconds or so before the sound card quits. Winamp will kind of lock up and Media Player will keep playing, but there is no sound. Wav files work okay, until I play an MP3. When the MP3 cuts out, all sound cuts out. Also, there is no sound under Quake 3.

Whenever I install the sound card, it installs it as Vortex 8830 (WDM). It won't let me install it as Vortex 8830 PCI. Another thing, it automatically installs the Windows 2000 drivers. It won't let me select the drivers. I can't update either. When I try the PCI driver, it says it won't allow it. I don't remember the error message though. Any ideas before I rush out to buy a Soundblaster Live? ;)

I just followed all of the instructions in the DOC file and it worked fine. Did you follow them all?

here they are...i had the DOC backed up somewhere...i remember it was a seperate file from the drivers on aureals site i think:

-----

Because these drivers aren?t digitally signed, you will have to work through these steps to properly install the drivers.
Uninstall:

· Go to the Settings->Control panel->system.
· Go to the system->Device manager. Uninstall the Aureal vortex PCI adapter.
· From the c:\winnt\inf directory, delete the following files.
· ?wdma_aur.inf?
· ?wdma_aur.pnf?,
· 'Adm_mult.inf'
· 'Adm_mult.pnf'
· 'Adm_port.inf' ,
· 'Adm_port.pnf'.

· Go to the c:\winnt\driver cache\i386. Rename the 'driver.cab' file to something like 'driver.cat' (so that your Adm88xx.sys file doesn't keep getting installed by the OS)

· From the Tools, then Folder options select View, check 'show all hidden folders'. Uncheck the ?Hide File Extensions for Known File Types? and uncheck the ?Hide Protected Operating System Files?.
· Then 'dllcache' folder appears under C:\winnt\system32.
· From the ?dllcache? delete the 'Adm88xx.sys' 'Admjoy.sys' files.
· Now go to the c:\winnt\system32\drivers. Delete the respective 'Adm88xx.sys' 'Admjoy.sys' files.
· Reboot.

Install:

· At the restart System prompts for Multifunction adapter. Install starts.
· In the middle of the install, the install asks for the following files. 'ksuser.dll', ks*.dll, 'portcls.sys' and '*.drv'. and finally 'aurealgm.arl'. (Everything is on your system except the aurealgm.arl file.) Browse to the following locations to install the above files:
· Ksuser.dll -> c:\winnt\system32
· ks*.dll -> c:\winnt\system32\drivers
· *.drv -> c:\winnt\system32
· portcls.sys->c:\winnt\system32\drivers
· Aurealgm.arl->?Browse to the driver location?.
· For the rest of the install browse to the driver location and the install is complete.
· Rename the ?driver.cat? (or whatever you named it) back to ?driver.cab?.

Just noticed that my post count was at 666. This is number 667. Thanks for the help, but I just pulled the card out. Win2000 just locks up when I play a wav file now. I have another comp that needed a decent sound card anyhow, so it's no big deal I guess. Damn Aureal! Hehe.

Spoon, I share your pain. Had same card and had to put in another box and get a soundblaster live. Good luck

Well, foolish me, I decided to save a little money and get a maxi sound muse. Oh my God! I'm soooooo frustrated now. I can't get the rear channels to play. :|
