Alright, for those who didn't see the original thread, it was located here.

I tried downloading the memory tester which AndyHui recommended at www.simmtester.com and have run the test several times without problems.

The error I get is as follows:

VXD VMM (01) + 0000xxxx (where xxxx is various hex codes)

Does ANYONE have a clue as to what this could be? I only encounter problems when I am running games, never any other time.

You need to check out Microsoft support. try this article as a starting point: Q256850
It's an article about the same error but in win 98se, worth reading.
I had the same error on my sons PC, I had virtual memory set to 250Megs max and min. I have now changed it back to let windows manage virtual memory and the error has not returned up to now.

Found out I am also having DDHELP errors in Kernel32.dll. Searched around and so far the best suggestion is to run RegClean from Microsoft. Tried this and seeing if my errors are still occuring. Will update later.

Any other suggestions are gladly welcomed.

A story for you....

I had a PC with Win 98 - it was stable and very rarely crashed.

I heard about Win 98 SE (good for gamers) - I "upgraded" - now this PC is very unstable and locks up frequently.
Several formats/re-installs later I'm still enduring instability...should I format I thought..?

Last week the same system was formatted and installed with Windows ME, It's like the old Win 98 machine :)

The hardware was the same throughout!

Some people report horrible problems with all the version of Win 9x - just see what suits you better if that is possible.

Personally Win 98 or ME was good for me - but others will say differently.

gtd 2000 - A complete format and reinstall is the only way to go. No chance for any gremlins left in the system that way.

You know I started out on win98, then did an upgrade to win98se. I have had problems on both OS's since this format. Then again, this format is the only time I've played a lot of games. The original thing that caused errors for me was installing one of the Microsoft critical security updates. Since then I've had problems in EverQuest especially.

Hello again, firstly I knew that Microsoft article wasn't the exact error you were getting but I thought it might give a clue to what was going on.My sons computer is still locking up with a fatal exception error:
0028:coooadfa in vxd vmm(01)+00009dfa
what I want to know is what does the file vmm32.vxd do, if I knew then it might help track down the problem. If all else fails then I will install Windows ME. I have it on my two PCs and it works great so I will get my son to give it a try.

the vmm32.vxd ... i dunno exactly but it does something necessary for windows... when i first got the error, my first inclination was to go replace the vmm32.vxd file and just reboot, turns out the file that i had on my OS was twice the size of the original in windows cab files... also, when i do the windows tweak to manually install the "missing" vxd's i do so in windows system file and the vmm32 folder inside, which leads me to suppose that the vmm32.vxd does something like storing driver profiles and such, needless to say, i dared not replace it with a fresh win_cab version = P
